Splitting weekend set, Big Green starts season

The Dartmouth men's tennis team began its indoor season this past Friday, competing against DePaul University in Chicago, Ill. Although the team fought hard, it lost to the Blue Demons, 7-0, before rebounding to beat the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay in Chicago on Saturday, 6-1.

"It was tough to play our first match of the season away against a tough DePaul team," Alex de Chatellus '13 said. "We started off slow, especially in the doubles, and by the time some guys started to get going in the singles matches it was a bit too late. We lost four tough three-set matches so despite the lopsided score, the match would've been up from grabs had we been able to take one of those third set matches."

In the second doubles match, Michael Laser '12 and Xander Centenari '13 lost a close match, 9-8. In singles, Curtis Roby '11, Cameron Ghorbani '14, Chris Ho '12 and Brandon DeBot '14 were able to win sets against their opponents but could not win their matches.

"It really could have gone either way with four of the singles matches going to three sets," Michael Jacobs '13 said. "It can be frustrating losing a match like that when you had chances to pull off a win, so it was awesome that we were able to bounce back [on Saturday] and pretty much destroy a good team."

Dartmouth (1-1) managed to dispatch Green Bay with ease on Saturday.

"In the second match on Saturday, we played much looser and we did a good job getting the doubles point which helped get us on track," de Chatellus said.

Centenari and Laser won six straight games en route to their doubles victory, after an initial 4-2 deficit. Three Dartmouth players Centenari, DeBot and Ghorbani all won straight-set victories.

Ho and Roby also won, despite losing their second sets.

"I thought we definitely could've played better in both matches but we fought hard all weekend," de Chatellus said. "It is also nice to get two matches under our belt before our first home match against Boston College. Our match last year against [Boston College] was one of the toughest, most exciting matches of the winter season so everyone is fired up to play them again on our home courts."

The men's tennis team will play against Boston College at 3 p.m. this Saturday in Hanover before the Big Green plays Sacred Heart University at home on Sunday at 2 p.m.
