Curious Jorge: Time to Shine

I'm back! I actually never really went anywhere during my two-month hiatus, though, I've just been really busy with things such as pong, hanging out and getting involved, which all basically mean the same thing I'm a pretty cool cat.

However, something that has really been taking up my time this term and I'm sure many of yours as well is corporate recruiting. This very stressful time is only worsened by our somewhat skewed dreams of working on Wall Street. No matter how anxious we may be, however, nearly all Dartmouth students involved in this corporate affair will most likely do extremely well in those nerve-racking interviews because that's what we do. We relish these demanding situations because we can demonstrate our set of skills and tools that will allow us to achieve our goals.

It is this insatiable desire to succeed that will lead many student-athletes to excel in their respective sports this upcoming fall. So without further ado, I present to you my preseason selections for teams who will shine in the fall and cause us to fall head over heels for them and to jump on their bandwagon.

Dartmouth Football

Two years can make a huge difference, and the shifting destiny of the Dartmouth football team is a clear-cut example. Two seasons ago, the team fought hard, but wound up with a winless season. Last season, the team demonstrated to its fans how it developed as a whole and the success that was yet to come.

Now, less than two months away from the kickoff of the 2010 season, I am a believer. The team has hired Don Dobes and Jim Pry to take over the defensive and offensive coordinator positions, respectively, which is the first sign the team is ready to advance to the next level. Dobes, who coached linebackers at Princeton University for the past 16 years, and Pry, who previously coached receivers at the University of Illinois, will bring a wealth of experience that can only mean positive things for the team.

There are also five players who were recently named to the All-Ivy Preseason first and second teams, which speaks volumes for the talent on this team and the recognition it's getting. My bold prediction for this year is that the team will wind up with at least a .500 record a far cry from 2008's winless season.Dartmouth Soccer

Last year the Dartmouth soccer team made it to the NCAA tournament, but was quickly ousted in the first round by Boston College. It was a very uneven season for the Big Green, as it began the season with a ridiculous amount of hype, but the team seemed to fade and lose momentum after posting a strong first half of the season. Fans were left utterly disappointed and heartbroken when the team lost in overtime to BC, but that's just the way the season went for the Dartmouth soccer team.

This year, however, I honestly believe the team will come roaring out of the gate and keep up the fiery pace all season long. Last season's leading scorer, Lucky Mkosana '12, will surely lead the team in goals again, but it's his veteran presence that will make the difference. As long as Mkosana and the rest of the team keep the fire in their hearts alive, there is no reason to believe the Big Green will not be atop the Ancient Eight at season's end.

Dartmouth Sailing

Back off. I know I've been constaly raving about this team all year long, but it's with good reason. This past spring, the sailing team made great strides in achieving national-powerhouse status. Although the season ended with a disappointment the women's team didn't even sail at nationals due to inclement weather conditions and was subsequently knocked out the team is primed to have a magnificent season in the fall.

Although the team did lose many integral components of their success, notably Becca Dellenbaugh '10, there are some members of the team who will be ready to take over as the primetime sailors. Captains Ali Hiller '11 and Peter Hughes '11 will lead the team full of savvy veterans, including Sam Williams '12 and Dellenbaugh's former sidekick, Rachel Moncton '12. The coed team finished the spring season ranked ninth in the NEISA conference, while the women's ended its season with a sixth-place ranking. Watch out for both teams building on their success this fall.

You may be wondering why I make such bold predictions. Allow me to inform you that just last winter I predicted the Dartmouth baseball team would win the Ivy League title. And they did. I know a couple things, and one of the things I know is that you should believe in these three teams the same way you believe you will wind up working for Goldman Sachs next winter.
