We've seen this kind of artificial intelligence before: a program that "learns" from the input of its users (remember that obnoxious online 20 questions game?). What, then, is so eerie and uncanny about Cleverbot? The thing, quite frankly, is too smart for its own good. Just check out the section of the site labelled "cleverness," where particularly hilarious interactions between users and Cleverbot are saved (and categorized). Some gems include a call-and-response version of the Pokemon theme song and a robot existential crisis. I'm worried about what will happen when Cleverbot has finally amassed enough knowledge to take over the world he's such a snarky bastard.
