Richard Granger, a Dartmouth professor and former director of the College's Neukom Institute for Computational Science, is being sued by Newport Harbor Lutheran Church for alleged involvement in his ex-wife's theft of $300,000 from the church, the Daily Pilot reported Wednesday. Granger, who formerly taught at the University of California, Irvine, moved from California to New Hampshire with his wife, Cheryl, after discrepancies in the church accounts were discovered, according to the Daily Pilot. The two have since divorced. Cheryl Granger plead guilty in 2008 to forging the signatures of church board members on more than 170 checks over four years and is currently serving a six-year jail sentence, the Daily Pilot reported. The lawsuit filed against Mrs. Granger also claims that Mr. Granger was aware of money stolen from the church that he received through a joint bank account with his wife. His lawyer asserts that he was completely unaware of the excess income and that his wife was in charge of the couple's finances.
California college students and faculty members participated in a state-wide protest against increases in tuition at state-run colleges and universities, as well as cuts to California's public school budget on Thursday, The New York Times reported on Thursday. One person was injured when police used pepper spray to stop a protester attempting to stop traffic in Davis, The Times reported. Groups involved in organizing and staging the protests included a variety of labor unions, student groups and left-wing political groups. Advocates are planning demonstrations at elementary schools, high schools and community colleges throughout the California state college system, according to The Times. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, R-Calif., met with education officials on Wednesday and acknowledged that the school system needs more money, but noted that the state also faces a $20 billion deficit.
