Spears said she will be responsible for making any ultimate decisions about changes to the procedures.
The SEMP advisory board, which consists of nine undergraduate students, was formed in October 2009 to address alcohol-related issues at campus events. The board has worked to reform guidelines on issues including the College's keg policy, party capacities and Safety and Security walkthroughs. Interim Associate Dean of the College Harry Kinne is serving as the committee chair.
The board had been meeting every two weeks during the Fall term to develop recommendations, Spears said, and has compiled their preliminary findings in a summary document.
"They're at the stage now where they're trying to confirm with everyone that the [proposal] truly reflects their conclusions," Spears said.
The preliminary recommendations may address inconsistencies regarding keg and beer quantity guidelines, according to Spears. She added that the most important consideration in her decision will be student safety.
"I have to be sure does it help reduce harm and aid students when there is alcohol served?" Spears said.
Spears said she will consult with College President Jim Yong Kim before making a decision on the policy.
Michael Funaro '12, a member of the SEMP advisory board, said board members will likely raise new suggestions and issues during the meeting, but declined to point to any specific policies that might be discussed. Other members of the advisory board did not respond to requests for comment by press time.
This will be the board's first meeting of Winter term, Spears said, noting that the board members have experienced difficulties finding a time to meet because of scheduling conflicts.
Spears proposed the creation of the board in late September after announcing that the College would not adopt the proposed Alcohol Management Policy, a repeatedly delayed set of guidelines on alcohol use spearheaded by former Dean of the College Tom Crady. The Student Assembly Membership and Internal Affairs Committee chose nine student applicants last October to revise the alcohol management policy.
The committee chose the board members to represent a wide variety of perspectives, including drinkers and non-drinkers, and affiliated and unaffiliated students, according to Student Body Vice President Cory Cunningham '10.
Cunningham is a former member of The Dartmouth Senior business staff.
The SEMP advisory board includes Funaro, Amaka Nneji '10, Noah Glick '10, Michelle Reyf '10, Daisy Jones '10, Billy Haley '11, Eric Tanner '11, Alexandria Blythe '10 and Alex Caron '10, according to an Assembly press release.
Tanner and Caron are members of The Dartmouth Staff.
Almost all of the students on the board are affiliated with a fraternity, sorority or co-ed organization at the College. Several of the students serving on the committee have current or past leadership experience within the Greek system.
Nneji is the current president of the Panhellenic Council, and has been a representative to the Greek Leadership Council, she previously told The Dartmouth. Tanner served on the summer executive board of Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity. Caron currently serves as a social chair at Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity, while Jones is a social chair of Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority. Reyf is the president of Panarchy undergraduate society, and Haley is a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. Blythe is a member of The Tabard co-ed fraternity.
