At track meet, athletes post first-place finishes

The Dartmouth men's and women's track and field teams saw strong performances at this weekend's Terrier Classic Invitational at Boston University, where five of the women captured personal records, while 11 men notched top-five finishes.

The Big Green secured two first-place finishes, as women's co-captain Natalie Stoll '10 took first in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:14.54, while rookie Barret Folk '13 won the pole vault, clearing 4.71 meters.

Stoll earned a personal record in the 500-meter, running the second fastest time in Dartmouth history.

"I always had an idea of what I wanted to do and I just went out and did it," Stoll said. "I was looking forward to the Terrier meet a lot, because the track is good and there is a lot of fast competition."

Also garnering personal bests were Lauren LaDolcetta '10 who cleared 3.35 meters to take second place in the pole vault, April O'Brien '13, who placed 11th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:07.17 as well as co-captain Monica Hernandez '10 and Lizzie Short '12, who both raced in the 3,000-meter run.

Hernandez and Short placed 18th and 23rd, respectively, and earned ECAC qualifying marks in the event.

"We always do pretty well at these meets and it's nice to run on a big track," Stoll said. "We have put a lot of hard work into training this year."

In the men's track events, Anthony Romaniw '13 took third in the 800-meter run, while co-captain Muhammed Abdul-Shakoor '10 came in sixth place in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 21.86 seconds.

Although expected to participate in the meet, Olympic gold medalist Bryan Clay was not present. There was still stiff competition to face, however, Abdul-Shakoor said.

"The caliber of the athletes at the Boston meet was pretty high," he said. "There were still a lot of other teams who put out really good times for events."

While Folk took first in the pole vault, Ken DiCairano '10 and Ian McAfee '12 followed in fourth and fifth, respectively. Co-captain Ted Lesher '10 placed third in the triple jump with 6.79 meters.

"Everyone did their part when they were called upon and the results showed that," Abdul-Shakoor said. "It showed the growth and experience of our team and that we paid attention to technical details."

The Big Green will host the Dartmouth Indoor Classic at noon this Saturday at Leverone Field House.
