The first Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center team to respond to the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti returned to New Hampshire late Monday night, the Associated Press reported. After arriving in Cange, Haiti four days after the earthquake, the nine-member team provided care to those in need at Zanmi Lasante Sociomedical Complex, a Partners in Health project, The Dartmouth previously reported. Members of the team included trauma, plastic and orthopedic surgeons and nurses, The Dartmouth reported. A second response team left Jan. 19 and remains in the earthquake-stricken country.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are expected to announce a $50-million grant to the state of Vermont for significant enhancements to Amtrak's Vermonter line on Thursday, according to a press release. As part of an $8 billion contribution from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the improvements will permit trains to travel at speeds up to 79 mph in some areas, and will allow for "shorter and smoother" rides, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said in the release. The upgrades will also help to create jobs and provide long-term benefits for Vermont's economy and public transportation infrastructure, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said in the release.

Apple CEO Steven Jobs unveiled the iPad, Apple's venture into the tablet PC market, at a press conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, The New York Times reported. The iPad will include Internet capability and the ability to buy and read e-books using a new Apple application, iBooks. The most basic model, which comes with Wi-Fi connection capabilities but not the ability to connect to 3G wireless service, will be available in stores this March, according to The Times. Models with 3G connectivity and increased memory storage will cost up to $829 and will go on sale 30 days later, The Times reported. The iPad is compatible with existing iPhone and iPod Touch applications, although developers also see the tablet as an opportunity to introduce new applications, The Times reported.
