While fraternity parties provide one of the most visible sources of entertainment after the freshman class finishes circling the bonfire, various concerts and non-Greek events promise to provide other options this Homecoming weekend.
Programming Board will cosponsor a concert by hip-hop artist Wiz Khalifa at Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity on Friday night. The concert will start at 10:45 p.m. and will be dry, according to Programming Board chair Joey Dang '10. Khalifa's techno-influenced single, "Say Yeah," was featured on many Billboard charts last year, Dang said.
Student groups have been trying to get Khalifa to perform since this past summer, Dang said. Tri-Kap and Programming Board split the cost of the concert, which came to approximately $2,000.
Three a capella groups will perform at Fall Fling, the largest a capella concert of the term, on Saturday evening.
The concert will feature the Decibelles, Dodecaphonics, and Yale University's all-male group, The Baker's Dozen. The concert will take place at 8:00 p.m. in Spaulding Auditorium and will showcase over 15 songs.
Katherine Niedt '12, a member of the Decibelles, said the concert will provide an opportunity for people to see a capella groups that usually only perform in small settings and to spread the "Homecoming spirit."
The Decibelles plan on singing eight songs, including "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield and "Breath" by Breaking Benjamin, Niedt said.
As members of the Class of 2013 run around the bonfire, Programming Board will also provide food and water in Collis Common Ground for those looking for a place to "chill out," Dang said.
After the bonfire, Collis Governing Board will throw an Afterglow Party in Collis Common Ground.
The party, which will last until midnight, will feature snacks, drinks and two DJs from Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity.
"It will be a great way for freshmen and upperclassmen to join together, hangout and socialize," Lawton Leung '10, co-chair of Collis Governing Board, said.
Afterglow and Greek events are not mutually exclusive, Leung emphasized.
"It's by no means a replacement for Greek events, but more of a complement for the night," he said.
Friday Night Rock will also host a rock concert at 10 p.m. in FUEL Rocket Lounge.
On Saturday night, Programming Board will host a "midnight breakfast" of French toast, hash browns, sausage and other breakfast foods, Dang said.
The breakfast will provide students with "somewhere to go and hydrate" and eat food during their night out, according to Dang.
The event is scheduled to take place in Collis or under the overhang of the Rockefeller Center, according to Dang.
