Briefly Noted

Dartmouth quarterback Alex Jenny '10 has been named a 2009 William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. Jenny, who is also a candidate for the 2009 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award, is one of only 37 FCS players to be selected, according to DartmouthSports.com. Semifinalists, who are nominated by their schools, must have demonstrated leadership and football abilities, have at least a 3.2 GPA and be in their final year of eligibility. The winner receives a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship and a 25-pound trophy. The 15 finalists will be announced on Oct. 29.

Cornell, Princeton and Yale gained preseason recognition from the USA Today/USA Hockey preseason poll. Yale, the defending ECAC Hockey and Ivy League champion, was ranked No. 11, while Princeton and Cornell placed ahead of the Bulldogs, at No. 9 and No. 7 respectively, IvyLeagueSports.com reported. Voters from the ECAC Hockey Writers and Broadcasters Association preseason poll chose Yale to finish first in the ECAC, beating out Cornell in the closest vote since 2001. The poll ranks Princeton at third place and Harvard at fourth, with Dartmouth coming in fifth.

The Columbia football team defeated Princeton 38-0 in its Ivy League opener. The game marks the first road shutout of a conference opponent in the Ivy League since 1961, when the Lions defeated Brown, 50-0, according to gocolumbialions.com. The win also marks Columbia's first Ivy League shutout since 1998, when the team beat Harvard 24-0. Columbia had solid offensive performances by M.A. Olawale and Ray Rangel, but it was the defense that made the difference, causing three turnovers that resulted in the first 17 points for Columbia. The Lions were up only 9-0 at the half, but the team's defensive play helped the team gain a 17-0 advantage in the third quarter, ultimately earning Columbia the victory.
