Daily Debriefing

Dartmouth is among five colleges and universities that have signed an agreement pledging their commitment to open-access publication, according to a Harvard University Library press release. Unlike traditional scholarly publications, open-access journals make their articles available at no charge. Open-access journals have been more successful in weathering the economic downturn because they rely on processing fees for editing and publication for income rather than on subscriptions and licensing fees like traditional journals, the release stated. The other institutions that have signed the agreement are Cornell University, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California, Berkeley. Each university is expected to help underwrite fees for articles submitted by its faculty members.

The Asian Pacific Americans for Progress has selected Dartmouth as one of the top 10 best colleges for Asian American and Pacific Islander students. APA for Progress highlighted campus resources for Asian American and Pacific Islander students at Dartmouth, including the Pan Asian Resource Room and the mentoring program run by College students for adopted Asian children in the community. The College's student organizations were also recognized for working closely with other minority student coalitions.

Princeton University, Yale University and Duke Universityare among 35 institutions that have elected to send information about research discoveries directly online, rather than feeding press releases to mainstream news organizations. The move was prompted by fears that the economic downturn has made it more difficult for the media to provide good coverage of new scientific findings. The universities' new online enterprise, Futurity, will provide articles to sites like Yahoo News, Google News, MySpace and Twitter.
