Hanover Police arrest two at Hitchcock residence hall on Friday

Hanover Police arrested a current Dartmouth student and a recent Dartmouth graduate at Hitchcock Residence Hall at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday for violation of the state's Controlled Drug Act, Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaconne told The Dartmouth on Monday.

Giaccone was unable to provide many of the details associated with the arrest of the two individuals, Jason Victor '09 and Athina Schmidt '11, both because of the investigation is ongoing and because officers have yet to complete their report.

The investigation began after police arrested Victor at approximately 1:25 a.m. Friday morning for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence in the River Residence Cluster parking lot, Giaconne said. The vehicle was then towed from the scene. Following that incident, search warrants were obtained for both individuals' rooms, Giaconne said, which led to a second arrest for Victor and the arrest of Schmidt.

Hanover Police, accompanied by Safety and Security officers, executed the warrants in Hitchcock on Friday afternoon, College Proctor Harry Kinne said.

Hanover Police took Schmidt and Victor into custody, and removed drug-related materials from Schmidt's room, Giaconne said.Giaconne could not comment on the nature of those materials because of the ongoing investigation.

Officers also searched another vehicle in front of Hitchcock. Giaconne declined to comment on the owner of that vehicle.

Victor's afternoon arrest was for a violation of conditions based on his release for the first arrest, Giaconne said, when he was charged with a misdemeanor for driving under the influence.Schmidt was charged for a misdemeanor and a Class A felony.

Both Victor and Schmidt were released on personal recognizance, which means they agree to pay a fine if they fail to appear on their assigned court date.

Victor's court date is set for Aug. 3. Giaconne did not know the timing of Schmidt's court date.

Typically during criminal investigations the College waits to take action until Hanover Police finish their work, Kinne said.
