Big Green right fielder Nick Santomauro '10 was drafted by the New York Mets today in the tenth round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft. Santomauro was chosen as the 314th pick overall.
In an interview with The Dartmouth this afternoon, Santomauro said that he was unsure whether he would finish out his career at Dartmouth.
"We'll see," he said. "We have to talk about that still."
Santomauro said that he will "most likely" spend the next few months playing for the Brooklyn Cyclones, a short-season A-ball affiliate of the Mets.
After being followed by a major league scout for months, Santomauro said that he was not surprised to be drafted, but was excited by the choice.
"I expected to get drafted today, but I didn't expect to go in the tenth round," he said. "I was pretty excited."
In addition to posting a .372 batting average this year, lefty Santomauro also drove in eight homers and 40 RBIs over the course of the season. Santomauro's efforts led Dartmouth to their first Ivy League title in 22 years and a trip to the NCAA Regionals, where the team was eliminated after losing two games in the Chapel Hill regional.
Santomauro's .376 career average places him third on Dartmouth's all-time list. He is also highly ranked in several other all-time Big Green categories, including walks, home runs and RBIs.
The power-hitter was named first-team All-Ivy for the third year in a row this spring, and also took home the title of Ivy League Player of the Year. Posting a remarkable .473 in league play, Santomauro was also awarded the Blair Bat prize for leading the Ivies in batting average, and was voted both the Big Green's MVP and top offensive player.
Garnering accolades even outside the Ivy League, Santomauro was also named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association's Division I Second Team.
The Big Green had two players chosen in the draft last year outfielder Damon Wright '08, who was taken in the 25th round by the San Francisco Giants, and left-handed pitcher Russell Young '08 who was taken in the 28th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Kyle Hendricks '12, a right-handed pitcher who was named second-team All-Ivy this season, was drafted in the 39th round last June by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
