The University of Texas baseball team defeated Boston College 3-2 in the longest game in NCAA history on Saturday night and into early Sunday morning, according to the Associated Press. In the top of the 25th inning, Travis Tucker hit a one-out RBI single to plate Connor Rowe for the eventual game-winning run. The game took seven hours and three minutes to complete and set the NCAA record for most innings played, eclipsing the 38-year-old record of 23 innings, the Associated Press reported. Tucker and teammate Michael Torres also set the NCAA record for most at-bats in a game, with twelve appearances at the plate each.
The Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team has been reinstated in response to a gender equality lawsuit against the university, according to the Associated Press. The school announced in March that it would cut the women's volleyball program in addition to the men's golf and outdoor track teams to save money. Federal Judge Stefan Underhill prevented the school from eliminating the program, saying that Quinnipiac had to comply with Title IX, the federal law that mandates equal opportunity for female athletes, the Associated Press reported. In order to maintain budget cuts, the school has decided to eliminate the men's indoor track program while university officials continue to assess the situation, the Associated Press reported.
Robin Harris, the incoming executive director of the Ivy League, is planning to go on a listening tour focused on the academic standards for athletes in the conference, The Wall Street Journal reported. The tour, which will take place after Harris assumes her job in July, will include stops at every school in the Ancient Eight, and will allow her to gain a sense for whether or not the league's academic standards for athletes should be changed, according to The Journal. The Ivy League's athletic power has declined steadily over the past few decades in sports that were once strong nationally, such as basketball, according to The Journal. While Harris is open to new ideas regarding the league's format, for now, academic standards for athletes will remain the same, according to The Journal.
