Women's lacrosse ends season with loss to No. 4 Duke

Co-captain Katherine Chiusano '09 had an assist in the Big Green's final game of the season against Duke on Sunday.
Co-captain Katherine Chiusano '09 had an assist in the Big Green's final game of the season against Duke on Sunday.

Dartmouth goalie Julie Wadland '10 allowed 20 goals in her 50 minutes of play.

The Big Green found itself behind early and never caught up.

The Blue Devils scored less than a minute into the game, and the first half ended with Dartmouth trailing 13-3.

Almost two minutes later, Duke was already up 3-0.

"Duke is definitely one of the best teams in the country, and we knew they were going to come out hard and play really well," midfielder Greta Meyer '11 said.

With 10 minutes to go in the first half, the Blue Devils were cruising at a 7-0 lead, but at 8:50, defender Colleen Olsen '10 capitalized on the first of Dartmouth's five free-position shots to get the Big Green on the scoreboard.

Dana Brisbane '12 soon followed a minute later with an unassisted tally, while Meyer scored off of a free position shot to make it 7-3 with 5:56 left in the opening period.

Dartmouth's offensive action was short lived, however, and the four-goal deficit was the closest the Big Green would ever be to catching up to Duke. Only 40 seconds later, the Blue Devils began an 11-goal run.

Despite Duke's dominance in the first half, Dartmouth refused to give up in the second period, as the Big Green's shot attempts matched Duke's at 12.

A blocked shot from Kirsten Goldberg '12 10 minutes into the second half was picked up again by Abigail Holden '11, who fed the ball to Olsen. Olsen again converted to raise Dartmouth's goal count to four.

Only three minutes later, Brisbane added her second goal of the game, with help from a Katherine Chiusano '09 assist.

With 25 goals and 23 assists, Chiusano was second in individual points this season, behind only Kat Collins '11. Chiusano was also an effective presence on the defensive end of the field, causing nine turnovers on the game.

With a one-player advantage, Collins also added to her own tally at 5:28 to make it 20-7, rounding off her season with 38 goals and 13 assists.

Brisbane completed her hat trick as well as Dartmouth's scoring with 47 seconds remaining in the game, converting a third free-position shot.

"It's always hard to lose, but mostly because we really started off the season strong, and it was kind of hard since our season sort of went downhill," Meyer said.

In a season where draw controls proved to be the deciding point of the game -- an area in which the Big Green struggled -- the team had relatively little trouble against Duke, managing to control 15 compared to the Blue Devils' 17.

The Big Green finished the game with 20 turnovers compared to Duke's 13.

Defense proved to be a major factor in the fast-paced game, as Duke secured 13 caused turnovers, while the Big Green could only claim six. Dartmouth, however, managed to improve in the second half as it brought its turnovers to six, down from the first period's 14.

Eleven different players nabbed at least one goal for Duke, while only four Dartmouth athletes contributed to the team's scoring.

The loss does not illustrate Dartmouth's whole season, as the Big Green managed to capture third place in the Ivy League, behind the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University.

Dartmouth also demonstrated its strength on attack this season, scoring 172 goals and contributing 72 assists.

"[Our results] were definitely better than last year," Meyer said. "And although we had some tough losses to Penn and Princeton, we were overall pretty happy," she said. "We just have to give everything we have and play as hard as we can next year."
