Men's, women's squash win two of three over weekend

Men's and women's squash picked up wins this weekend against St. Lawrence and Hamilton, but fell to Cornell.

The men came away with a 6-3 loss against Cornell, while the women's squad extended its conference losing streak with a 9-0 blowout.

The No. 8 Dartmouth (9-4, 0-3 Ivy) and No. 4 Cornell (9-2, 3-2 Ivy) men's teams exchanged wins back and forth at the top of the order, yet a late push by the Big Red in the seven, eight and nine positions led to Cornell's overall victory.

Nick Sisodia '12, Mike Lewis '11 and Michael Shrubb '10 posted the Big Green's only wins.

Playing in the number two spot, Sisodia shut out Cornell sophomore Will Hartigan in three games, ceding a total of only ten points.

Sisodia attributed his strong performance to his overall focus throughout the match.

"I walked on court and concentrated from the first point on and kept the pressure on him throughout," he said. "The concentration lapses are something I've been working on correcting all season, and this was a good breakthrough."

Both Lewis and Shrubb, playing in the number four and six positions, respectively, took their opponents to the fifth game in what proved to be tense back and forth affairs. Shrubb edged out his opponent, Charlie Wagner, with a fifth game score of 9-5. Lewis snuck past freshman Dave Hilton at the end with a secure 9-3 victory in the final game.

"We overheard one of their players say that they were expecting to blank us 9-0, but we put up a great fight and came extremely close to walking away with the victory," Sisodia said.

Co-captain Tyler Young '09, in the number seven spot, and Stephen Wetherill '12, in the number eight spot, also extended their matches to a fifth game, yet neither could pull through for a win.

"We'll get them at nationals," Sisodia said.

The Dartmouth men's team found success on Saturday with a clean sweep against No. 19 Hamilton College (7-5, 3-3 NESAC) on Friday.

The entire Big Green lineup dispatched their opponents in three quick games.

No. 7 Cornell (5-4, 1-4 Ivy) trounced the No. 9 Dartmouth (8-4, 0-3 Ivy) women's squad with a 9-0 sweep.

In the number two spot, co-captain Madeline Lurio '09 put up a strong fight against junior Rebecca Hazell, taking the match to five games.

Lurio found herself behind 2-1 heading into the fourth game. She picked up her play, squeezing in a victory in the fourth game by a slim 10-9 margin. Her comeback failed to translate to an overall win, however, as Hazell took command in the fifth game, claiming it with a score of 9-7.

Taylor Tully '11 extended her match-up against freshman Lauren Sachvie to the fourth game, yet fell short of victory.

Cornell blanked the rest of the Big Green players.

The women's team fared better against No. 16 Hamilton College (7-4, 5-2 NESAC) on Friday, cruising to a 9-0 victory.

After a closely contested first game, Hannah Conant '11, in the number one spot, dropped the second game to Kelly Whipple. Conant regained control, overwhelming Whipple and taking the match back by winning the last two games.

Both the men's and women's teams will host Brown on Saturday at the Berry Courts in Hanover.
