Big Green track hosts Dartmouth Relays, men win overall

Sunday featured men's and women's collegiate competition, with events ranging from the 60-meter dash to hurdles. On the women's side, Dartmouth had top finishers in several of the races, including the 400-meter run, mile run, high jump and pole vault.

In the 400-meter race, Big Green runners finished third, fourth, sixth and seventh. Alexandra Tanner '11, Zawadi Rowe '12, Kaleigh Wood '11 and Natalie Stoll '10 were the top finishers for Dartmouth.

In the mile run, the Big Green women were paced by Marissa Greco '12, who came in eighth with a time of 5:16.76. Kat Eidmann '10, Laura Tabor '10 and Laura Hempel '12 rounded out the top finishers for Dartmouth, with times of 5:23.03, 5:30.54 and 5:33.60.

Dartmouth also performed well in many of the field events. Alyson Pickett '12 placed first in the high jump, while Natalie Todd-Zebell '09 finished second in the pole vault.

On the men's side, the Big Green team won the meet overall, and boasted many runners with top finishes. Muha Abdul-Shakoor '10 finished fourth in the 60-meter dash in 7.06 seconds. Dartmouth runners Julian Thomas '09 and Tyler Ford '11 finished fifth and sixth in the 400-meter run with times of 50.61 and 50.99.

"Being the first meet of the season, no one really had any breakout performances," Tim Wunderlich '09 said. "But everyone competed well enough to win or place high in their events."

In the 800-meter run, Dartmouth swept the first four places. Trevor Middleton '09 won the race in 1:55.92 followed by Dwayne Alexis '11, Brendan Norris '12 and Ben Bramhall '11.

In the 3000-meter run, Ben True '08 finished first for the Big Green with a time of 8:05.55. John Schroeder '10 finished fourth in 8:26.80, with Chris Zablocki '10 and Brad Kenimer '12 not far behind, placing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Rounding out many top performances for Dartmouth were Ken DiCairano '10, who won the men's pole vault, as well as Michael Poppler '10, who placed first in the long jump.

"I'm really looking forward to what we can do this season," Wunderlich said. "We have hopes of surprising the other Ivy League teams with our performances."

Friday's events included the men's heptathalon, master's events, high school medley relays and the women's pentathalon. Karen Woolley '09 won the pentathalon with a score of 3389. Albany's Kamilah McShine came in second with 3259 points and Rocco Pallin '12 was third with 3113 points.

Wunderlich captured the men's heptathalon title for the Big Green, defeating Justin Benjaminson of Northeastern with 4837 points to Benjaminson's 4466. Bob Contuzzi '12 came in third with 4351 points.

On Saturday, the high school athletes took to the track, setting two meet records. George Chambers from Arch Curly High School in Baltimore, Md., won the boys' 300-meter dash with a record time of 34:92. Chambers also won the 55-meter dash in 6.61 seconds.

Julie Labonte of Quebec also broke the Dartmouth Relays' high school record in girls' shot-put with a throw of 51 feet, five inches, besting the previous best mark of 49 feet, five inches.

The Dartmouth track and field teams will travel to New Haven, Conn., next Sunday where they will compete against Yale and Columbia. The Big Green will also prepare to host the Dartmouth Indoor Classic on Sunday, Jan. 31.
