The only goal of the game was scored by Brown's Sylvia Stone two minutes into the second half. Senior goalkeeper Laurel Peak '09 made a diving save off of a shot from the Bears' Marybeth Lesbirel.

The rebound fell right into the feet of Stone, who then drove the ball past Peak and into the lower corner of the net.

Stone's was the first goal scored by Brown (3-3-2, 1-0 Ivy) against the Big Green (4-3, 0-1 Ivy) since 2002.

The Bears have started off the season strong, with a victory against No. 11 Pennsylvania State University and a scoreless tie against top-ranked University of California-Los Angeles.

"This game was obviously a huge one for us, as Brown was our first Ivy League opponent," junior midfielder Kelsey Quick said. "Today's loss will just be more of an incentive to beat every other team in the league. It's frustrating that we're now 0-1 in our Ivy record, but as our coach told us after the game, there's rarely one team who goes 7-0 in the Ivy."

The Big Green found itself at the Bears' goal often, taking 11 corner kicks throughout the course of the game, eight of them coming in the second half.

But the Big Green did not have luck on its side, as two of Dartmouth's shots hit the crossbar as time was winding down in the second half.

"Unfortunately we weren't able to come up with a goal, although we were very close in the last 15 minutes," Quick said.

"I think today's game was like any other Ivy League game we play throughout the season," she added. "Every single one is a battle. There is rarely an underdog in the Ivies."

The first missed opportunity came in the 81st minute, when Quick served the ball into the box to forward Peyton Tata '11, whose header hit the crossbar.

The best chance for the Big Green was a direct kick just outside the 18-yard line with three minutes left to play in the second half.

Midfielder Katie Davis '11 took a shot that sailed over the defenders and the goalie, but hit the crossbar and was scooped up by Brown keeper Brenna Hogue.

Also in the 87th minute, junior midfielder Myra Sack's corner kick was deflected in the box but sailed just wide of the Bears' goal.

"I think we all worked really hard today, despite the end result," Quick said. "We obviously always have areas in which we can improve. I think offensively we needed to use our width better today -- both outside forwards and backs."

The first half between the two teams was dead even, with Dartmouth holding a 5-4 shot advantage over the Bears.

Both teams had great opportunities to take the lead, but failed to convert.

The Bears took two corner kicks within the first ten minutes of play. One attempt led to a great save by Peak off of a shot from Brown's Bridget Ballard to preserve the tie.

"We needed to come out in the first half the way we played the last 15 minutes of the game," Sack said. "I think it would have been a different result had we done that."

Later in the half, Dartmouth nearly took the lead with a corner kick from Quick that was headed just inches over the crossbar by Sack.

"Obviously it's a really disappointing result but we need to look ahead and get ready for BU [Boston University] and Princeton next week," Sack said. "The Ivy title is still there for the taking."

Dartmouth ended its two-game win streak, with the Big Green's last victory coming on Thursday against the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.

Freshman forward Aly O'Dea netted her second straight overtime gamewinner that afternoon to give the Big Green a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats in the 105th minute.

Katie Davis '11 scored the first goal for the Big Green early in the first half with a header off of a corner kick by Quick.

Soon after, in the 14th minute, the Wildcats evened the score on a breakaway from UNH's Shaunna Kaplan, who beat Peak with a shot low and away.

Dartmouth outshot the Wildcats 22-9 throughout regulation, but UNH keeper Nikki Golding made 12 saves to keep her team in the game.

The Big Green square off against Boston University on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in Hanover. Ivy play will continue for Dartmouth with a match at Princeton Saturday at 1 p.m.
