Police Blotter

April 26, 12:35 a.m.

East Wheelock Street

Two female students found a Co-Op Food Store shopping cart near the Hopkins Center and decided to ride it down the street. Hanover Police intercepted the students and suggested that riding a shopping cart at midnight is "not a good idea." The students then offered to return the cart and left without further incident.

Choate Road

Dartmouth Safety and Security requested an ambulance assist for an intoxicated female on the third floor of Brown Hall. Hanover Police was informed that the student had consumed multiple shots of alcohol, mixed drinks, beer and Kool-Aid punch over the course of the night. When her friends tried to bring her home, the female fell several times inside Brown. The student soiled herself as her friends attempted to bring her to the bathroom, where she began to vomit. Hanover Police reported that the student had a blood alcohol level of 0.20. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 27 unless she qualifies for the alcohol diversion program, which has not yet been determined.

South Main Street

A clerk at CVS Pharmacy reported that an apparently intoxicated male had entered the store carrying a red snow shovel. The subject proceeded to growl at the clerk, according to Hanover Police. Police records did not indicate whether the clerk was male or female. CVS surveillance tapes revealed a subject who appeared to be a redheaded, college-aged male and could barely stand. Although Hanover Police searched the area, the shovel-carrying subject is still at large.

North Main Street and Wentworth Street

Hanover Police observed a male student who tripped over his own feet repeatedly and nearly fell down as he stumbled across the Green towards North Main Street. The officers intercepted the male as he reached North Main Street and explained that they were stopping him because he displayed visible signs of intoxication. The student contended that he was fine, denied he had consumed any alcohol and claimed he was just heading back to his room in the River Cluster. Nevertheless, the officers administered a series of field sobriety tests because they smelled the odor of beer on the male's breath and said he was slurring his words. The student failed these tests. A breath sample indicated that the student had a blood alcohol level of 0.10. The student was subsequently arrested and assigned a May 27 court date. It is undetermined at this point if he will be eligible for the alcohol diversion program.

April 28, 7:37 a.m.

Appalachian Trail

A Lebanon Street resident reported a homeless person sleeping beside a trail in the woods behind the Hanover Co-Op Food Store. Officers located the man, who is a native of Tennessee. Hanover Police said the man has been making campsites at various locations along the trail since the winter. At one point, officers encountered a campsite 30 to 40 feet from a field near the Co-Op, which they said looked messier than a landfill because it was full of items he had gathered. The site was subsequently cleaned though, officers do not know who cleaned it. If he makes U.S. Service Forestland his permanent residence, Hanover Police explained, the man is not permitted to stay in any given shelter for more than two or three consecutive days.

Choate Road

A 911 dispatcher contacted Hanover Police regarding a male student in Brown Hall with an arm injury. When officers arrived at the scene, the injured person stated that he had fallen on the ground while wrestling with a friend and landed in an awkward position on his right side. The male continued to tell the officers that he was concerned about the damage he may have caused himself because he believed he had lost a significant degree of the range of motion in his right shoulder. During questioning, the student admitted he had been playing pong earlier in the night and recalled consuming six or seven beers. The student was taken to Dick's House for attention to his injury and intoxication. While in the room, one of the officers incidentally noticed a plastic bag taped over the smoke detector. Unless the student qualifies for the alcohol diversion program, he will appear in court on May 27 on charges of unlawful possession and intoxication. Hanover Police does not intend to bring charges against the student related to the plastic bag blocking the smoke detector, but reserved the right to charge him with up to a class B felony for the action.
