After the frenzy of fraternity rush during the Fall and Winter terms, Dartmouth's Greek organizations had a relatively quiet Spring term recruitment, with only Sigma Nu and Alpha Delta fraternities inviting new members to join.
Fraternities individually decide whether to engage in a spring rush process, Taylor Holt '09, vice president of rush for Dartmouth's Inter-Fraternity Council, said in an e-mail to The Dartmouth. This year, most fraternities decided to opt out of spring rush.
Sig Nu has offered spring rush events in the past, according to fraternity president Alex Guyton '09. Although some organizations hold spring rush to compensate for disappointing recruitment yields in the fall and winter, Sig Nu conducted its rush process this term solely to give men who had displayed interest an opportunity to join, Guyton said.
"We had more [pledges] this fall than last year," Guyton said. "We are happy with the guys, so it is not so much a numbers push. One guy was given a winter bid, but wanted to sink in the spring."
Sig Nu's weekend events included a dinner on Friday evening and official fraternity rush on Saturday. The fraternity, which expected to gain two or three new pledges, offered bids to four men and all four sank their bids, Guyton said.
"This is not like fall rush -- we are just getting in a couple more guys," Guyton said.
AD, which held a modified version of rush, welcomed five interested pledges to the house, according to fraternity president Jeff Kolovson '09. The spring pledges rushed in the fall but could not accept their bids until this because of scheduling conflicts with the soccer season.
"In the past, guys off in the fall who were interested in rushing contacted us, and if we were interested, we would hold rush for them in the winter," Kolovson said. "We would delay their pledge period until the spring so they could pledge alongside the soccer players."
AD has limited the extent of its spring rush, in part, to focus on recruiting prospective members from the Class of 2011 for the upcoming fall rush process, Kolovson said. AD, along with a number of other fraternities, will host recruitment events this term in anticipation of fall rush.
There were no IFC procedural changes for spring rush, Holt said. The IFC is responsible for coordinating rush "to make it as friendly as possible to both the prospective new members as well as the fraternities," Holt said in an e-mail to The Dartmouth.
