Squash teams improve Ivy records with victories over Brown

Dartmouth got back on track in the Ivy League against Brown on Saturday.
Dartmouth got back on track in the Ivy League against Brown on Saturday.

The men's team (12-3, 2-2 Ivy), which is ranked sixth in collegiate play, beat No. 16 Brown (1-9, 0-5 Ivy) by a comfortable margin of 7-2, winning all matches except the No. 5 and No. 7 spots.

Adam King '08, Ted Newhouse '09, Michael Lewis '11 and Dan Wagman '10 each won their matches in three games.

Head coach John Power was content with the team's general level of play.

"Michael Lewis and Dan Wagman were impressive," Power said. "They didn't have any trouble, and the rest of the guys just got the job done."

In the No. 1 and No. 8 spots, Andrew Boumford '09 and Tyler Young '09 posted solid performances, winning their respective matches in four games.Ted Schroeder '11, in the No. 9 slot, had perhaps the most exciting match of the game, battling to a win in five games.

Though Newhouse was not entirely pleased with the outcome of the match, he was hopeful about the team's attitude heading into its upcoming matches against No. 2 Princeton (5-1, 2-0 Ivy) and No. 9 Penn (4-4, 1-2 Ivy).

"We played pretty well, but we could have played better. We could have been a little more focused going into the match," Newhouse said. "But I think everybody knows that this upcoming weekend is important and will go in super focused."

The women's team (9-4, 2-2 Ivy), which is ranked seventh, slid by No. 9 Brown (5-6, 1-4 Ivy) with a game score of 5-4.

The win is significant for the Big Green women, whose victory against the Bears is important in light of Brown's recent 5-4 win over No. 6 Stanford. Stanford beat the Big Green earlier this season by a 5-4 margin.

Power was pleased by the result of the match.

"On the women's side, it was very, very tight. Us winning 5-4 was quite exciting," Power said.

Co-captains Ashley Malenchak '08 and Christie Alexander '08 defeated their opponents in the first two spots with game scores of 3-0. Alexander, coming back from an injury, allowed only 10 points in the entire match.

"The one who gets the award for guts and glory was Christie," Power said. "She hasn't been able to practice this whole week. She's been having real troubles with her knee but she went out and won three-love against the [No. 2-ranked opponent] and that really got us going."

In the No. 5 spot, Hannah Conant '11 also dispatched her opponent in three games, winning her second two games with close scores of 10-8.

Maura Doherty '11 won her match in the No. 8 slot after a difficult five games, losing the first and fourth games before coming back to win the final game with a score of 9-2, clinching the match for Dartmouth.

Both the men's and women's teams will face Ivy foes Princeton and Penn as well as non-conference rival Middlebury this weekend in their last matches of the regular season.
