While the Dartmouth women's
tennis team did not lose a single
match against Boston University and
Quinnipiac, the men's team had two
close losses, each by the score of 4-3,
to Marquette and No. 70 Northwestern.
With the pair of wins, the women's
team (5-0, 0-0 Ivy) remains one of
only two undefeated teams in the Ivy
League, along with the University of
Pennnsylvania (2-0, 0-0 Ivy).
The win against Boston University
showed how much the team has improved
from last year, according to
tri-captain Megan Zebroski '08.
"We were definitely satisfied with
the way we played this weekend,"
Zebroski said. "We lost to BU 0-7 last
year, so it was quite a turnaround from
last year."
The Big Green made quick work
of the Terriers, with only two of the
matches going the full three sets.
"Most of our matches went pretty
quickly," Zebroski said. "Jesse Adler
'10 and I needed thee sets, but we
pulled out our matches."
Playing at No.1, Molly Scott '11
had a dominating match, winning
convincingly with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
On the following day, the Big
Green barely broke a sweat against
the Bobcats. Despite resting the No. 2
through No. 4 players in singles, only
one match went the full three sets and
Quinnipiac never threatened.
Georgiana Smyser '11 at No.3 and
Catja Carrell '08 at No. 6 both won in
dominating fashion, only losing one
game.
Zebroski talked about the homecourt
advantage that the team enjoys.
"Playing at Boss is always a lot of
fun," Zebroski said. "We have a lot
nicer facilities than ones that we play
on when we go on the road. It's always
nice to play in front of the home crowd,
and we had pink grips and shoelaces
this weekend to support breast cancer
research so doing that was a lot of
fun."
On the other hand, the men's team
(2-2, 0-0 Ivy) now sports a .500 record
on the year, with all of its contests
coming on the road.
Against Marquette, the Big Green
got off to a good start against the
Golden Eagles. Dartmouth won all
three of its doubles match-ups to take
an early 1-0 lead in the contest.
Dartmouth could not sustain its
momentum, however, and Marquette
would come back in the singles matches
to take the 4-3 win. For Dartmouth,
co-captain Mark Brodie '07 won his
match at No.1 and newcomer Curtis
Roby '11 won at No. 5, both in three
sets. Ari Gayer '09 dropped his match
at No. 4 a tough-three setter, 4-6, 6-3,
3-6.
The next day against Northwestern,
the Big Green suffered another
loss that could have gone the other
way on another day.
The Wildcats drew first blood,
winning two of the three doubles
match-ups to take the doubles point.
The bright spot in doubles for the Big
Green was the victory by the freshman
pair of Roby and David Fink '11.
In singles, Roby continued his
good weekend with a victory at No.5.
Also winning for the Big Green were
Brodie at No.1 and Dan Freeman '10.
Stephen Grief '11 was locked in a tight
three-setter with the contest on the
line, but fell just short 4-6, 6-2, 3-6.
The women's team will be back
in action at home against UMass"
Amherst on Wednesday, Feb. 20, and
the men's team will host Stony Brook
and Marist on Saturday, Feb. 23 for its
first home matches on the season.
