The Senior Executive Committee of the Class of 2008 announced the names on Monday of the eight students who will join the committee. The new members of the SEC are Charlie Volanakis '08, Conor Frantzen '08, Erica Jones '08, John Manning '08, Jordan Nahas-Vigon '08, Kate Eklin '08, Monica Martin de Bustamante '08 and Zainep Mahmoud '08. The decision came after four hours of deliberations by the committee over who would receive appointments, according to the committee's announcement. In addition to the eight appointed members, David Glovsky '08, who placed 13th in the SEC elections, replaced Travis Green '08. Green chose to step down from the committee, stating that he felt he was overcommitted and that there were more qualified people who could dedicate the required time to the committee. The SEC, a body of students that directs the affairs of the senior class for five years after graduation, held elections last week to select the committee's first 12 members, who then appoint the remaining eight.
The New York Times featured a story on the town of Hanover in its "Escapes" section on Feb. 8. The article highlighted Hanover and other nearby towns in the Upper Valley as attractive locations for second homes, due to a combination of solitude and accessibility to cultural events offered by Dartmouth. The story went on to describe local businesses such as the Nugget Theater, Dirt Cowboy Cafe and the Canoe Club as touchstones of Hanover's social scene. Dartmouth's facilities were also deemed significant selling point for area residents.
Middlebury College faculty and staff are currently discussing changes to the school's policy on relationships between professors and students, The Boston Globe reported on Feb. 10. Middlebury hopes to clarify the language of its current position on such relationships, which, though strongly discouraged, are not forbidden or necessarily classified as sexual harassment. The issue is one to which colleges have taken varying approaches, according to The Globe. The University of Vermont has banned relationships when a student is working under a professor, while St. Michael's College has outlawed student-professor relationships altogether. Middlebury plans to reach a decision regarding the issue later this month.
