Student Assembly passed legislation to fund a Cutter Shabazz Alternative Space Party and renew funding for the Profiles in Excellence Award and the Course Guide Incentive Program at its meeting on Tuesday. The party at Cutter Shabazz is part of a series of Student Assembly sponsored events designed to inform students about affinity housing and celebrate existing social spaces on campus.

"I think that especially with the Beta-AZD situation, we want to address social spaces in the short term as well as the long term," Annie Kasitaza '08, co-chair of SA's diversity and community affairs committee, said. "One thing that we want to see is the utilization of existing spaces on campus, especially under-used spaces like Cutter Shabazz and Fuel."

The Profiles in Excellence Award is a program which recognizes outstanding professors nominated by the student body and the Course Guide serves as a resource for students when selecting students. Other ongoing projects discussed at the meeting included Collis Up All Night, an event that will be held this Friday and will feature a Dartmouth's Next Top Model competition, casino games and a dance party.

Students and faculty members of the College of the Siskiyous in California called for the resignation of college trustee Dorris Wood after she objected last month to the addition of new credit courses in Arabic and Middle Eastern History, arguing that the subjects "support the sworn enemies" of the United States, Inside Higher Ed reported.

"When I look at this proposed class, my one thought is that we know all we need to know about the Arabs and Islam. They are our enemies: pure and simple," Wood said, according to Inside Higher Ed.

The classes were approved in spite of Wood's comments. The College of the Siskiyous' president, Dave Pelham, issued a formal apology on Wood's behalf but Wood refused to apologize or resign and plans to run for re-election this fall.
