After a highly successful fall season and productive winter, the Dartmouth sailing team is in the thick of their spring season. This past weekend of April 14th through the 15th the women's team was at the Dellenbaugh Women's Regatta at Brown University. The Big Green women finished in the middle of the pack at eighth out of 15, far behind first place St. Mary's. The A team of Becca Dellenbaugh '10 and Steph Gagnon '10 finished in eighth. In the B division, the team of Adele Wilhelm '08 and captain Kate Hacker '07 finished sixth.
Saturday's race took place under fair skies and light winds, while the Sunday portion of the race occurred with rain and cold temperatures.
While there is no strictly men's division, males from Dartmouth sail in a coed division. This past weekend, there were multiple coed regattas that took place at the University of Rhode Island, Boston University and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. While as a team, Dartmouth seemed to struggle, there were a few highlights from the weekend. At the USMMA Admiral's Cup regatta, the team of Erik Storck '07 and Killarney Loufek '07 placed fourth in the A division; however with a last place finish in the C division, the Dartmouth team score landed Big Green sailing in 14th out of 20 behind first place Yale. The URI regatta faired much worse for the team. With a last-place finish under windy conditions, the athletes look to bounce back this weekend. Finally, a 15th-place finish at Boston University capped off a less than-stellar-weekend for Dartmouth College sailing.
However, these poor showings have not been the norm this season. The team has had some very successful regattas. A fourth place at a Connecticut College and Coast Guard Academy regatta and a first place at the Lynne Marchiando Trophy at MIT has been more of the norm for the season.
Much of the disappointment from this past weekend can be blamed on a lack of practice. The past week's weather conditions
