Fighting Sioux win Dartmouth hockey tournament

Shelby Grantham, an English professor at the College, protested the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux logo outside Thompson Arena on Dec. 29. UND beat the Big Green, 4-1.
Shelby Grantham, an English professor at the College, protested the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux logo outside Thompson Arena on Dec. 29. UND beat the Big Green, 4-1.

Protesting outside of Thompson was Professor Shelby Grantham. Grantham, a figure known for polarizing views, especially on race and gender issues, stood outside holding a sign that read "American Indians are people not mascots." Grantham was unavailable for comment.

Sioux goaltender Philippe Lamoureux made 25 saves for North Dakota (9-10-1), as Dartmouth (5-6-2) fell in the second game of the Ledyard National Bank Hockey Classic Friday night.

The action got started with each team notching a shorthanded goal. A Rylan Kaip strike gave North Dakota a 1-0 lead with 2:21 removed from the first stanza. Dartmouth evened things up at the 1:29 mark of the second period on a unassisted tally by junior David Jones '08. The goal was Jones' 7th of the season. A turnover led to the North Vancouver native's scorching streak into UND territory, which ended with him firing the puck over Lamoureux's right shoulder.

The game was deadlocked at 1-1 until 6:33 was left in the third period, when Robbie Bina scored the gamewinner for North Dakota. After Bina pulled UND past the Big Green in the third, Andrew Kozek tallied an insurance goal three minutes later. As goalie Mike Devine '08 watched from the bench so that Dartmouth could add an extra skater, UND's Ryan Duncan flipped one into an empty-net, and lit the lamp with 42 seconds left.

Devine made 14 saves for Dartmouth, and has played every minute in net for the Big Green this season.

Dartmouth's power play was its Achilles heel. Dartmouth squandered an astonishing eleven power play opportunities on Friday night, failing to capitalize on a single one. The advantages were often short-lived, with Big Green players frequently traveling to the penalty box, leaving the squads to battle four-on-four on the ice.

"We need to get better on our power play," head coach Bob Gaudet said. "A power play goal tonight and it might have been a different game for us." Still, Gaudet added that: "I thought we played a good game, they were a well coached and a very good hockey team. We played hard but it just didn't go our way. We're continuing to battle and we'll find a way."

While the Fighting Sioux moved on to the championship game against the St. Lawrence University Saints (9-9-1), Dartmouth took on the Boston University Terriers (7-4-5) in the consolation game of the tourney.

The BU game didn't bring much consolation to the Big Green. Dartmouth fell to the Terriers 3-0. The Big Green held BU scoreless until the third period, when the Terriers exploded, spurred on by Matt Gilroy's goal and assist in the frame.

The Fighting Sioux, apparently undeterred by demonstrators and not distracted by mascot controversy, racked up four scores against the Saints, downing St. Lawrence 4-2. The game remained tied 2-2 midway through the third period, when North Dakota found some more late game magic. Duncan scored a power play goal at 9:33, putting the Sioux ahead for good. He then scored on an empty net with 34 seconds left on the clock to finish the scoring and lock up the tournament for UND.

Dartmouth's next action comes on Friday. The Big Green will make the trek to upstate New York to take on Union (8-8-2) at 7 p.m.
