Harper, Weatherall '83 to be inducted into Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Harper will be inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Nov. 11.

The U.S. Lacrosse Board of Directors confirmed the 10 new members earlier this month following the election.

Harper, the seventh director of athletics at Dartmouth and the first female to hold the position in the Ivy League, is the only coach in the 49th class. She graduated from West Chester University in 1965 and also coached the U.S. national team and served as a coach to the U.S. World Cup team in 1982 and 1986.

Harper joined the Dartmouth coaching staff in 1981 as the women's lacrosse head coach and led Big Green lacrosse to a pair of Ivy championships during her lacrosse tenure from 1981-92.

Despite her accolades, Harper said, the honor took her by surprise.

"To me, [this award means] recognition from [my] peers, that [I] have made a contribution and difference to a sport that gave me so much as an individual," she said.

Harper was inducted into Dartmouth's "Wearers of the Green" in May 1999, the New England Lacrosse Hall of Fame in June 2000 and the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame in Feb. 2002.

Weatherall, one of the most accomplished female lacrosse players at Dartmouth, will be one of seven players inducted this year. A veteran of three U.S. World Cup teams who helped the U.S. to two championships, Weatherall is the first female Big Green lacrosse player to be inducted into the hall of fame. In 1982, she played on the winning U.S. World Cup team, of which Harper was an assistant coach. At Dartmouth, she earned first-team All-American honors in 1982 and 1983 in addition to three All-Ivy honors.

Weatherall still holds the Dartmouth record for the most points scored in a game with 12 points.

"To have Sandy inducted at the same time makes this honor even more important to me -- having been Sandy's coach on the Dartmouth lacrosse team as well as on the U.S. team -- brings everything home, so to speak," Harper said.

Weatherall served as the head coach for the lacrosse program at the University of New Hampshire from 1993 to 1996 where she led the Wildcats to an ECAC championship. Weatherall has been inducted into the Pingree School and U.S. Lacrosse New England halls of fame. She has also received the Beth Allen Award and been honored as one of Dartmouth's "Wearers of the Green."

Two former Big Green lacrosse players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame before Weatherall's nomination; Avery Gould '30 was inducted in 1966 while Joseph Wilder '42 received his honors in 1986.

The Lacrosse Hall of Fame has recognized individuals annually on the basis of their achievement and contribution to lacrosse since 1957. The hall of fame aims "to honor men and women, past and present, who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of the sport of lacrosse to our way of life," according to the organization's website.
