The men and women saw solid finishes from several of their athletes, highlighted by a first-place finish in the shot put by Jamila Smith '06 for the women and second-place finishes from Ikechi Ogbonna '06 in the 60-meter hurdles and Mike Carmody '08 in the 800-meter run for the men.
"This was one of the biggest meets in the country, both in terms of the volume of athletes and in the number of national-level performers," said men's head coach Barry Harwick '77. "Several of the athletes that competed at BU will be All-Americans this year."
Smith threw 44'9 3/4" to win the shot, and also took third in the weight throw with a 51'8 1/4" toss.
"I had a solid meet," said Smith. "Winning in a big meet is always exciting, but I am more concerned with reaching my goals than winning."
Ogbonna had a career-best time of 7.54 seconds in the hurdles, while Carmody clocked a 1:51.30 in the 800-meter to secure the fastest time in the event among Ivy athletes this season.
"It was my first 800 of the season, so I was pretty pleased with my performance," said Carmody. "I would have liked to have run a little faster, but it's a decent start."
The Big Green also had strong performances from its other athletes, with several IC4A/ECAC qualifying and Ivy-best efforts.
"Going in, I basically asked [the team] to compete, meaning to go out and race, not just run," said women's head coach Sandra Ford-Centonze. "We aren't trying to peak at this point, but we definitely wanted to remain or get a little faster, and that's what they did."
Times were aided by the fact that BU has one of the fastest indoor tracks in the country, a result of the turns being banked.
"[The track at BU] is the same size as the Dartmouth track, but its turns are banked and this is a big help to running fast indoors," said Harwick. "Our athletes have been working really hard and they were fully ready to take advantage of the track and the high level of competition."
In the 5,000-meter run, Alec Wall '07 and Dave Burnham '06 posted the top two Ivy performances with times of 14:13.32 and 14:14.53, respectively. Their times made them eligible for the March IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships, where they will square off against the best of the East. George McArdle '06's 14:32.55 run also met the qualifying standard.
Dartmouth's four 3,000-meter runners all posted personal bests, with Steve Mucchetti '06 leading Dartmouth and Ivy athletes with an 8:10.33 performance. Mucchetti and Owen Marcotte '08 both met the IC4A qualifying standard, with Marcotte clocking in at 8:22.66.
Charlie Stoebe '08 and Ricky Cedrone '07 also met the IC4A standard, running 1:04.98 and 1:05.09 in the 500 meters, respectively -- both personal bests. Stoebe and Cedrone also combined with Jamal Brown '08 and Calvin Richardson '06 in the 1,600-meter relay to go 3:17.66, by far the squad's best time this year.
Melanie Schorr '06 continued her string of strong performances this week, qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships with a time of 16:48.47 in the 5,000-meter run. Schorr qualified for ECACs in the 3,000 last week.
One of the feature events of the meet was the mile, where a Providence runner broke 4:00, going 3:59.33 to win the event. Harry Norton '08 clocked a 4:07.75 in the event to claim the fastest Ivy time for the season.
Both the men and women notched strong performances in the pole vault, as Tim Wunderlich '09 upped his personal best to 14'0" and Erika Graham '08 and Lilly Bertz '07 finished third and sixth, respectively, both with jumps of 10'7".
Dartmouth also picked up third-place finishes in the shot put and triple jump, as Rob Kerris '07 threw 51'1 1/2" and Milan Williams '09 showed his potential with a personal best 43'9 1/4" jump.
With less than a month to go before Dartmouth will battle its Ivy opponents in the Heptagonal Championships, the Big Green will look to continue its improvement leading up to the meet.
"The approach over the next few weeks will be to get more speed and fresh legs," said Ford-Centonze, "But [we'll] still [be] working hard."
The Big Green will return to Hanover next weekend when the team hosts the Dartmouth Indoor Classic here at Leverone Field House.
