Painting the College green: The D goes color

As Fall term classes begin today, the changing leaves won't be the only thing adding color to the Dartmouth campus.

Starting Wednesday, America's oldest college newspaper will print both its front and back pages in full color each production day, bringing readers more exciting photos and more compelling infographics.

The paper's leadership credited the loyalty of The Dartmouth's daily readers and the College community as reasons for investing resources in regular color printing.

"The D relentlessly strives to provide readers with the most relevant and incisive coverage of events on the Hanover plain," said Colin S. Barry '06, President of The Dartmouth. "We're confident that the integration of regular color graphics will both boost the paper's informative value and sharpen its overall appearance."

Color printing should also allow the paper to more effectively showcase the talent of its design and graphics staff, Barry said.

Since the spring of 2004, the cover of The Dartmouth Mirror, the newspaper's weekly arts and entertainment supplement, has been printed in color and, beginning last spring, its back cover ran in color as well. Both improvements mark the start of The D's attempt to regularly publish color content -- before 2004, only special issue covers and select advertisements merited full-color printing.

The decision to print daily color pages also comes after several years of fiscal stability and growth on the newspaper's business side.

The D is the official student newspaper of Dartmouth College. The paper is entirely student-run and independent of the College, and published by a corporation that is among the largest student-run non-profit groups in the country.
