Men's track and field place second, women take fifth

Dartmouth's track and field teams finished off their regular outdoor season last weekend at the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the Reginald F. Atkins Track and Field Complex at the University of New Hampshire.

The Big Green men's track finished second out of 36 teams with 119 points, only seven points behind the University of Rhode Island.

The women's team finished fifth out of 34 teams, behind meet champion Boston College, runner-up University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Boston University, and host UNH.

Mike Carmody '08 had an outstanding performance in the 800-meter run as he took first in the event in 1:51.88 while classmate Ben True '08 topped competition in the mile run. Harry Norton '08 finished second in the mile race behind True.

"I was glad I won the race, but not too pleased with the time. It was my last chance to qualify for NCAA regionals, so I thought of the race as more of a time trial than an actual race," Carmody said.

"I felt good and was pretty much on pace to qualify but I hit a pretty steady wind down the home stretch and missed the qualifying standard."

"Ben True, however, ran the most amazing race I've seen," Carmody added. "He absolutely embarrassed the competition."

Fatih Stanley '06 was fifth in the 100-meter dash while teammates Brian Evan '08 and Ikechi Ogbonna '06 clocked seventh and eighth place finishes in the same event.

Dave Burnham '06, Ian Marcus '07 and Noah Kaufman '05 scored points for the Big Green in the 5000-meter run, capturing third, fifth and eighth place respectively.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Rick Cedrone '07 took fourth place. Brian McCarthy '05 tied for third in the high jump with a 6-8 leap while Derrick Vinklarek '08 was fifth in the pole vault.

Mustafa Abdur-Rahim '04 was second in the long jump while Randy McKnight '08 captured sixth place in the triple jump.

In the shot put, Rob Kerris '07 and Matt Brown '05 finished third and fourth respectively. Kerris also placed sixth in the discus throw.

John Moran '05 took eighth place in the hammer throw while classmate Andrew Hall '05 placed fourth in the javelin.

Sean Furey '04 extended his javelin winning streak at the meet and won by more than 20 feet.

"It's exciting to continue my win streak, but I can't wait to run into tougher competition and really earn my victories," Furey said. "I always hope for a good competition, but I figured that I wouldn't see many top throwers at this meet."

In the decathlon, Hall captured second place with 6,649 points while Tyler Koskenoja '07 finished fourth in the multi-event.

On the women's side, Kelsey Wiegmann '06 continued her dominance in the javelin and took first place this past weekend. However, a back injury prevented her from finishing the heptathlon.

Melanie Schorr managed a fourth place finish in the women's 5000-meter run while Victoria Michelotti '08 finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. In the discus throw, Melissa Machaj '07 finished fifth.

Tessa Clare '05 took first in the high jump. Her 1.75m finish was more than three inches better than the second place competitor.

"It feels great [to win]. This season has gone really well for me and it was nice to end the regular season with a win like that," Clare said. "It is a personal best but I have been jumping really close to it this season. I couldn't quite get it, so it was great to finally get over it at my last meet."

Clare's performance tied Wiegmann's school record in the high jump.

Lilly Bertz '07 finished fifth in the pole vault with an 11-3 attempt while classmate Jadah Chatterton-Richmond '07 was third in the long jump and the triple jump. Chatterton-Richmond had a spectacular meet as she took fifth place in the heptathlon.

"Jadah was the only one of us to finish the hep," Wiegmann said. "After having done a heptathlon less than a week before, I think she showed a lot of guts to go out there and put together another one."

Wiegmann, Clare and others who qualify will be participating in the NCAA East Regional Championship in two weeks in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in June.
