Teevens to be tapped as head coach

Dartmouth Athletics Director Josie Harper will announce the name of the new Dartmouth football head coach Wednesday at 3 p.m. All signs point to the return of former Stanford coach Eugene "Buddy" Teevens '79, who successfully coached the Dartmouth football team more than a decade ago.

Hailing from Massachusetts, Teevens has impressive experience on and off the Dartmouth field. As an undergraduate at Dartmouth, he led the Big Green to the 1978 Ivy League football title and was named Ivy League player of the year. Teevens was also part of the College hockey team's 1979 third-place national finish.

After graduating from Dartmouth with a history major, Teevens took a job coaching the running backs at DePauw University for a mere $900 a year. But, the job catapulted Teevens to positions at Boston University and the University of Maine. He was named Dartmouth's head football coach in 1987 at age 31.

Teevens inherited a struggling Dartmouth team that had won only seven games in the prior three seasons. After a shaky first year, Teevens turned the team around and led the Big Green to two Ivy League titles during his five-year stay.

Teevens accepted a position as head coach of Tulane University in 1992, leaving behind a successful team at Dartmouth. Former Head Coach John Lyons took over a team that posted an 8-2 and 7-3 record in his first two years at Dartmouth with future Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler '94 at the helm.

After five years at Tulane, Teevens was named offensive coordinator of the University of Illinois for two years before becoming assistant coach under Steve Spurrier at the University of Florida from 1999 to 2001.

During his time at Florida, Teevens coached Rex Grossman, Jesse Palmer and Jabar Gaffney and led them to Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl appearances.

In 2002, Teevens was hired to coach at Stanford University. In his three seasons at Stanford, Teevens posted a disappointing 6-23 record. In addition to the dismal record, a 41-6 loss to rival University of California Berkeley and the off-season arrest of a Stanford running back sealed Teevens' fate.

With Charlie Rittgers '06, Chad Gaudet '08, Josh Dooley '06 and Ray Rochester '07 returning, Dartmouth has talent to utilize on both sides of the ball.

By hiring Teevens Wednesday, the Athletics Department would bring demonstrated experience to a promising Dartmouth team.
