To The Editor:
Dean Furstenberg is under attack for comments he made in private to another college administrator. Furstenberg expressed the opinion that just maybe the college's overall mission is compromised by admitting football players who are not as academically qualified as some of their peers.
Alumni have a right to be upset -- not by the dean's comments, which merely represent the realities facing officers balancing admissions at elite campuses nationwide -- but by the fact that Furstenberg's writing was made public.
President Wright should continue to ignore calls for Furstenberg's head and let Furstenberg get back to the essential job for which he was hired.
