Big Green laxers accumulate postseason honors

After finishing the 2004 season with an 8-5 overall record and tied for third in the Ivy League, the Big Green captured seven spots on the 2004 men's lacrosse All-Ivy teams and six selections on the All-New England teams.

Tom Daniels '04 was named to the second team for both All-Ivy and All-New England. Daniels, a preseason All-American, finished the season with 18 goals and 34 points. Known for being one of the quickest kids in the Ivies, Daniels used his speed and handy stick skills to create many offensive opportunities for the Big Green.

Russell Radebaugh '04 made honorable mention All-Ivy. Radebaugh recorded 12 goals and nine assists, and was one of the more technically sound and consistent players on the squad.

Ben Grinnell '05, one of the best midfielders in the country, was a first team All-Ivy and first team All-New England selection. With his old-school game, Grinnell led the team in both assists (22) and points (41).

"Individual honors are the result of those around you," said Grinnell. "As for the midfielders, it's pretty solid that everyone on the first mid line got some kind of recognition. My two linemates, Rurad and Brad, definitely deserved their honors. Their play made me and everyone else around them a lot better."

Patrick Keeley '05 was the other Dartmouth laxer selected to the first team for both All-Ivy and All-New England. Keeley, who has an awkward smile in photographs, was dominant in the backfield and led a Big Green defense that was second in the Ivies with only 103 goals allowed.

"It has been a privilege to play with Adam White, Matt Nicholson and Pete Lilly on close defense," said Keeley. "We trust each other on the field and that enabled us to work well as a defense."

Keeley credits goalkeeper Andrew Goldstein '05 for much of the defense's success.

"As a defenseman it is comforting to know that when we mess up Goldstein will be there to bail us out," said Keeley. "He did this many times this year and deserved more recognition for his excellence in goal."

Goldstein was a second team All-Ivy and All-New England selection. Goldstein, the Big Green's sole representative on the preseason Tewaaraton Watch List, has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Ivy League for the past two seasons.

Jamie Coffin '06 was a first team All-New England pick and was selected as honorable mention All-Ivy. Coffin, who has the sickest diving shot in the league, led the Big Green with 29 goals. In just two years, Coffin has already recorded 47 goals and 75 points.

Brad Heritage '06 was also recognized for his strong play in 2004, gaining honorable mention for both All-Ivy and All-New England. The lefty from Cheshire, Conn., racked up 17 goals on the season.

"I was completely surprised with my recognition," said Heritage. "The amount of awards that our team received shows the balance that we had, which made us such a threat. It is a testament to how hard we all work day-in and day-out, 365 days a year."
