Lebanon Police filed seven separate charges against Todd Dubois of Deerfield, N.H., in the wake of a severe crash that put three drivers in the hospital on Monday. Dubois remained at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Tuesday, and hospital officials listed his medical condition as "fair."
Police officers originally tried to stop Dubois "for his involvement in a felony-level offense of trying to obtain prescription drugs" in Enfield, according to a police reports. Dubois reportedly would not pull over and caused a three-car accident soon after Lebanon officers stopped chasing his car.
Dubois might have been drunk or under the influence of illegal drugs at the time of the accident, law enforcement sources reported. He was previously suspected of similar prescription drug-related crimes in Concord, Manchester and Nashua.
Driving on Route 120 near Centerra Shopping Center, Dubois clipped another car's bumper while attempting to pass on the right in the breakdown lane, Hanover Police Chief Nick Giaccone said. Dubois' car subsequently veered over the highway's median strip and ran head-on into a van owned by Dartmouth College's Design, Printing and Mailing Services Department.
The car Dubois tried to pass "swerved to its left and then crossed the median and rolled a couple of times," Giaccone said.
Dubois fled into a nearby wooded area following the accident, but was picked up by Lebanon Police shortly thereafter and transported to DHMC by ambulance.
The two drivers of the vehicles Dubois allegedly hit were also treated for injuries at DHMC and had been released on Tuesday according to the hospital's Public Affairs department.
Dubois stands accused of "driving while deemed a habitual offender," two counts of disobeying an officer, reckless operation, two counts of resisting arrest, and illegal conduct after an accident.
There were no passengers in the College-owned van, as police had originally believed.
"There were only three vehicles and three people," Giaccone said.
Dubois is scheduled to appear in court on May 11 to address the charges stemming from the accident. Specific charges regarding Dubois' alleged attempts to procure prescription drugs have not yet been filed.
