The Dartmouth softball team opened its Ivy League season at home with a double header split against Columbia this Saturday.
The Big Green took the first game, 3-1. Danica Giugliano '04 (4-4) pitched a fantastic game, allowing only two hits. She struck out seven, walked four and gave up just those two singles to hold the Lions (10-14, 2-2 Ivy) to a lone run in the sixth.
Dartmouth's offense erupted in the fourth and fifth innings. The Big Green rallied in the fourth with three straight singles. Alicia Petryk '06's hit scored pinch runner Christina Ferraris '06 to put the Big Green on the board.
In the fifth, Kisa Brannen '03 picked up a two-RBI single, giving the girls all the runs they needed to win the game.
In the nightcap, the score reversed, with Columbia taking the game 3-1. Lisa Caruso '04 (0-3) pitched a solid game for Dartmouth. She allowed only one unearned run in the sixth inning off a sacrifice fly. The other two Columbia runs were unearned in the third off an infield single.
Dartmouth's lone run was scored when Lisa Brannen doubled home Carly Haggard '03 in the fifth inning.
Brannen had a great day, going 5-for-6 in the doubleheader with three RBI. Jessica Reiten '06, Kerry Conway '05, Adrienne Draper '04 and Carly Haggard '03 all had multiple hits on the day, with Haggard going 4-for-4 in the second game.
On Monday the team hosted Cornell (20-4, 3-1 Ivy) for another double header. Dartmouth dropped both games, dropping the Green to 1-3 in the Ivy League season so far.
The Big Green bats were active throughout the entire first game. The team out-hit Columbia 6-5, however, it was only able to score one run off its hits. That run came in the first inning when Conway scored on Brannen's single to right field.
Giugliano was charged with the loss, putting her at 4-5 on the season. She allowed five hits and three earned runs. With 10 strikeouts, Giugliano tied a career-high.
In the nightcap, pitcher Christine Quattrocchi '03 took the loss, putting her at 0-4 on the season. She pitched the complete game, allowing four strikeouts and eight hits, four of which were homeruns.
