Shutouts continue against UVM

The Dartmouth field hockey team (7-3, 3-1 Ivy) traveled to Burlington on Wednesday where it shut out the University of Vermont, 1-0, to extend its winning streak to a season-high four games.

In the opening minutes of the contest, Amanda Malgari '03 found Lauren Welsh '03 for the lone goal of the game.

Welsh, Dartmouth's career goals leader, scored the game-winning goal for the third time this season. Welsh just recently set the all-time scoring record against Yale.

Big Green goalkeeper Hannah Murnen '06 recorded her first shutout of the season and Dartmouth's third in a row. Dartmouth out-shot the Catamounts 17-10 and had 14 corners to Vermont's nine, as UVM dropped its record to 4-11 on the season.

"It was a cold messy day," coach Amy Fowler said, "but we found a way to finish. Amanda Malgari had a solid game in the backfield. She stepped up very well and in the first three minutes of the game, fed Lauren Welsh with a great pass from about the 25-yard line. Welshy redirected the pass and beat the UVM keeper."

"Today's game gives us momentum heading into a tough weekend. Friday's contest vs. UVA (No. 14 in the country) will be the first test. Our game has improved immensely since the beginning of the season; we are looking to raise our level one more notch this weekend," Welsh continued.

Dartmouth travels to Cornell to face the University of Virginia Cavaliers at 1 p.m. this afternoon.
