Streaky Big Green take Terriers by surprise at MIT

Rebekka Stucker '04 lifted the Dartmouth field hockey team over Boston University, 3-2, by scoring her first goal of the season with just 4:40 left in Monday afternoon's match at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Stucker was able to put the ball home thanks to an assist from Lauren Welsh '03, following a scramble for the ball that resulted from a Dartmouth corner.

Stucker was the Ivy League's third-leading point producer in 2001 with 12 goals and four assists but has had a hard time finding the touch that helped make that possible. Teammate Welsh finished second in the Ivies with 15 goals and two assists and is leading the Big Green thus far this year.

Dartmouth drew first blood in Monday's encounter when Caitlin Barrett '04 scored 4:44 into the game with an assist from Welsh. Boston quickly countered when Celeste Hubbard found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 at the 12:22 mark.

The Terriers took a 2-1 lead when Hubbard scored her second of the game less than two minutes into the second half of play.

The score stood at 2-1 in favor of the Terriers until Dartmouth's Ashley Choren '05 tied things up on the first goal of her career with 7:42 left on the clock, setting the stage for Stucker's game winner.

Dartmouth dominated the offensive side of the ball, recording a total of 18 shots to BU's six. Big Green goalkeeper Lauren Balukjian '06 made four saves, all of them in the second half.

The Dartmouth women used this come from behind victory to improve their record to 3-2 while beginning their first winning streak of the 2002 campaign.

The Big Green started off on the right foot with a 5-4 home win against Brown before taking a slide on the road.

Dartmouth then traveled north only to receive a 5-1 beating at the hands of Maine before trying its luck further south at Princeton, where the Big Green took a 9-1 thrashing.

The ladies, however, put a stop to their road woes by defeating Fairfield University 6-2 and now seem comfortable in any location.

The Dartmouth field hockey squad will next take the field against the University of Delaware in New Canaan, Conn. on Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
