Dartmouth sailing teams move up in polls

Dartmouth's sailing teams once again have been recognized for the extraordinary job that they do out on the water.

The Inter Collegiate Sailing Association ranked Dartmouth's coed squad second in the nation behind Old Dominion who had previously been ranked fifth. The Big Green, No. 6 in the last poll, leapfrogged Harvard (now No. 3), Tufts (4) and St. Mary's (5).

The former No. 1 team, the Georgetown Hoyas, fell all the way to seventh, dropping behind Boston College.

Dartmouth's women's team also made a sizable leap, jumping up three spots from No. 6 to No. 3 behind Tufts and St. Mary's who had been 2nd and 3rd respectively. Former No. 1 BU, Connecticut College and Brown all dropped behind the Big Green in the poll.

The rankings are determined by a coaches' panel comprised of Mitch Brindley of Old Dominion, Ken Legler of Tufts and Mike Segerblom of USC.

The coed team also received word yesterday of their opponents for the ICSA North American dinghy races to be held at Wheeler Beach State Park, Narragansett, R.I. hosted by URI. The races will be held June 6-8.

Dartmouth is one of three Ivy League schools who made the 18-team field along with Harvard and Yale. The three Ivies along with Boston College and Tufts, with an at-large bid, are the representatives from the NEISA, the New England region of college sailing.

Dartmouth's opponents come from all over the country from New York to Hawaii. The MAISA sends the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Old Dominion, St. Mary's and Georgetown with the other at-large bid.

Michigan and Wisconsin will represent the MCSA while Washington will come to Rhode Island out of the NWICSA. Hawaii and California " Santa Barbara hail from the PCIYRA and will come along with the College of Charleston and Florida from the SAISA.

The SEISA's teams, Texas and Texas A&M " Galveston, round out the field.

The coed dinghy races will be the third in a series of North American championship races for the Big Green who will compete in the women's dinghy races May 29-31 and the Team Sailing Championships June 3-5.
