No. 11 Big Green downs UMass

On a chilly afternoon, Dartmouth women's lacrosse easily defeated the University of Massachusetts Minutewomen yesterday, 13 to 3. Tri-Captains Suzy Gibbons '01 and Amy Zimmer '01 combined for three goals and four assists, and freshman standout Lana Smith tallied three goals.

"This was one of the first games where we really put everything together, from defensive to attacking ends," Smith said.

The Big Green opened the scoring early in the game when Gibbons scored off a pass from Zimmer at 27:28. Less than 30 seconds later, Gibbons assisted on a goal by Amy Frazier '02 to give Dartmouth a 2-0 advantage.

Smith put Dartmouth up 3-0 on a free position shot at 26:00. Kelli Kurtz put the Minutewomen on the board at 25:13 when she scored on a free position shot to pull UMass within 2.

However, this was the closest UMass could come to catching Dartmouth, as Molly Jenkins '04, Jen Newitt '02 and Liz Merritt '01 rounded out the scoring of the first period to send Dartmouth into the second leading 6-1.

Smith started the scoring in the second half when she scored at 27:00 on an assist from Zimmer. Smith scored again at 25:43 to pull Dartmouth ahead, 8-1.

Alison Moulin '02 further extended Dartmouth's lead at 21:58 on an assist from Gibbons.

UMass attempted a comeback when freshman Minutewomen Miriam Godrey scored on an assist from Fay Naber to bring the score to 10-2.

However, Gibbons squashed any slim hopes when she scored at 5:59 to pull Dartmouth ahead 11-2, only to add another tally at 4:16. Kate Cole '02 added one final mark for Dartmouth as she scored on an assist from Whitney Jamison '03.

UMass made one final attempt with 52 seconds left when Miriam Godrey nailed her second goal of the game, but the clock ran down, and Dartmouth left the field the victors, 13-3.

The Minutewomen pulled goalie Jen Nardi at the end of the first in favor of sophomore goalie Cyndi Doyle. Sarah Hughes '02 remained in goal throughout the game for the Big Green.

Dartmouth improves to 5-1, and UMass falls to 1-6. The next Dartmouth home game is this Saturday at 1p.m. against Cornell. Cornell is currently 6-1 overall, 2-1 Ivy, and is coming off a loss to Princeton this past weekend.

"The entire team was intense and in sync and we played solid lacrosse for the full 60 minutes," commented Gibbons. "Today's performance gives us a lot of momentum towards Saturday's game against Cornell."
