Men's lacrosse loses in final seconds to Bulldogs

Yesterday's Dartmouth men's lacrosse game against Yale ended in heartbreaking defeat. Yale's one-goal victory over the Big Green has to leave the team wondering what went wrong. In such a close game, it is extremely difficult to pinpoint any one factor as the cause of the loss.

Dartmouth, 0-3 in the Ivy League, got off to a good start in the first half. The solid defensive effort matched with big goals kept Dartmouth in a good position.

In the first quarter, the Bulldogs' defense allowed only one goal to be scored by Dartmouth, on a Jake Dwyer '03 score from Wes Lippman '03. Yale tallied three goals of its own in the quarter on shots by Brian Hunt, Adam Werder and Ryan Floyd.

Yale's defense could not stop Dartmouth's ambush of the goal in the second period.

The Big Green offense hammered the Yale defense to the tune of four goals in the second quarter, keeping Dartmouth in the game.

Scott Roslyn '03 started the scoring-fest off with an extra-man goal from Russell Radebaugh '04.

This was followed by Dwyer's second of the game and an unassisted score by Chris O'Hara '01. David Farber '03 capped off the scoring with a goal assisted by Georges Dyer '01.

At the same time, the Bulldogs were coming at Dartmouth's goal with a similar vengeance.

In the second, the men from New Haven blitzed the Big Green again, scoring another three goals to put the team up 6-5 at the half.

After the intermission, both squads came out hoping to press the attack. Despite the aggressive offensive play, the quarter turned into a defensive struggle.

In the third, both teams allowed the other to score only one point, giving Yale a 7-6 lead at the end of the period.

In the final period, the Big Green took control, scoring three straight goals. Casey Burlage '03 popped in the first goal on an extra-man attack from Schuyler Minert '01 at 13:49.

Farber then took over, scoring two goals nine seconds apart from O'Hara and Roslyn to give Dartmouth a 9-7 lead.

Yale waited until 5:47 to fire their response. Edward Britt scored a pair of goals less than four minutes apart to tie the game at 9.

Then, with nine seconds left in the game, Yale's Mike Morris knocked in a ten-foot shot from Mike Scaglione, giving Yale a 10-9 victory.

Floyd was the leading scorer for the Eli's adding an assist to his pair of goals. Hunt, with a goal and an assist, and Edward Britt with his two goals were Yale's other multiple-point scorers.

Farber's hat trick led Dartmouth while O'Hara's three points came on a goal and an assist. Roslyn and Dwyer added two points each for the Big Green in defeat.

Goalie Mike Gault '03 made nine saves for the Big Green in the loss. Yale's Adam Oppenheimer made all his saves in the first and third quarters, finishing with eight on the game.

Dartmouth will look for its first Ivy win on Saturday, when the team hosts Brown. This will be followed by the makeup against Sacred Heart.
