M. lax crushes Sacred Heart's spirit

In a rescheduled game against Sacred Heart, Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team added another non-league victory to their resume yesterday. The 19-14 victory in front of the crowd at Scully-Fahey Field marked the Big Green's greatest number of goals scored in a game since a March 17, 1999 victory against Holy Cross.

Dartmouth scored first on an unassisted tally from Starke Mueller '04 2:53 into the game. Sacred Heart quickly went on the offensive and stole back Dartmouth's momentum.

The Pioneers scored three goals in 1:08 on Dartmouth goalie Mike Gault '03 and were looking to put the Big Green away early. Garret Bamann and Stephen Grabow each garnered a goal and an assist in the flurry.

The Big Green responded to Sacred Heart's challenge with their own flurry. Darren Yulfo '04, cut the lead to 3-2 with an unassisted goal with 8:01 on the clock.

Jake Dwyer '03 and Russell Radebaugh '04 then scored 33 seconds apart to put Dartmouth on top 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The late quarter flurry turned into an 8-2 run over the rest of the half to head into the break with a fragile 9-5 edge. Chris O'Hara '01 and Tom Daniels '04 scored early in the second quarter around the Pioneer's two goals before Dwyer netted his second with 6:20 to play in the half.

Ross Johnson '02 then lit the lamp witha pair of unassisted tallies only :49 apart to put the Big Green up four.

Grabow added his second goal during the run for the Pioneers, who pulled goalie Bryan Campo with 5:00 to play in the half.

Sacred Heart opened up the scoring in the second half though, with James Delmonico scoring 45 seconds in on a feed from Erick Perez.

The three-goal deficit was as close as Sacred Heart would get for the rest of the day. Dartmouth scored five straight goals over 6:43 to push the lead to 14-6.

Scott Roslyn '03 and Schuyler Minert '01 led the charge as Minert fed Roslyn twice for scores on goalie Mike Kelly. Radebaugh added his second tally in the middle of the spurt.

Johnson finished off his hat trick on an extra-man goal at 7:20 on another Minert pass.

Trying to stay in the game amidst the Big Green's offensive firepower, Sacred Heart picked up a pair of unassisted goals at the end of the third quarter from Kevin McCrain and Chris Swier to pull within six.

The teams traded off goals at the start of the fourth quarter, with Sacred Heart's Lucas Robertson scoring first.

Bamann scored his second for the Pioneers at 5:37 to make the score 16-10. With time starting to run low, the Big Green slammed in a coffin nail with three straight goals.

Tom Daniels '04 scored his second of the day to start the blitz and Lucas Ballet '04 ended it off a slick pass from Geoff Colla '04 with only 3:41 to play. Sacred Heart just wouldn't die, even down by nine goals, and ran off four straight before the game ended.

Grabow scored the first three of them with his last coming with nine seconds to play. Josh Mathon added one more with two ticks left on the clock against backup goalie Scott MacArthur '02 to close out the scoring.

Grabow led all scorers with his five goals to which he added an assist for a game-high six points. Perez added four points on a goal and three assists while Bamann and Mathon each had a pair of goals for the Pioneers.

Johnson led the Big Green with four points, while Daniels and Minert each added three. Russell Radebaugh'04 and Dwyer also scored a pair of goals for Dartmouth in the victory.

Gault made 11 saves over 55:30 in getting the win, while Sacred Heart's goalie tandem made 21 stops against Dartmouth's unrelenting pressure.

The win evens Dartmouth's overall record at 6-6, 1-3 in the Ivy League, as the Big Green prepare for a tough Ivy League battle against No. 1 Princeton on Saturday at noon.
