Columbia surprises Ivies

In the first weekend of Ivy League play, Dartmouth came out in a four-way tie for the first place in the Red Rolfe division. Columbia was the big surprise grabbing the lead in the Lou Gehrig Division after their sweep over the Big Green.

Brown

Brown split with Princeton in this weekend's Ivy action. The usually strong Brown squad showed they could put down the defending Ivy Champs behind Ivy Player of the Week Dan Kantrovitz's four-hit, two-double, three-RBI effort.

Brown sits with a 5-10 overall record and 1-1 in Ivy play after their match with Cornell was postponed.

Cornell

Cornell, unable to play a home game yet due to poor weather, split with Yale in an away contest to post them at 1-1 in Ivy competition. Cornell was led by Vince Santo who had two homeruns, and Justin Irizarry who was 4 for 5 with two doubles, a run, an RBI and a stolen base.

RHP Brendan McQuaid hurled 8 1/3 innings for a no-decision and remains undefeated at 2-0.

Harvard

Harvard split double-headers with both Columbia and Penn over the weekend. After routing the Lions in the first game 14-0, the Crimson fell 3-2 in a pitching duel at the nightcap.

Penn scored 14 runs to defeat the Crimson in their first game before Harvard edged the Quakers 3-2 to stand at 2-2 in Ivy play, 5-13 overall. Ivy Rookie of the Week Marc Hordon was 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored in the Harvard victory over Columbia. He also leads the team with a .344 batting average.

Princeton

The defending Ivy League champs split with both Yale and Brown over the weekend to stand at 2-2 in Ivy competition, good for second place in the Lou Gehrig division. The Tigers took a 4-2 win over Yale in the first game before dropping the second by a score of 9-2.

Princeton split with Brown in the same fashion despite a season high five doubles in their second game.

Yale

Yale defeated Princeton in its first Ivy League game of the season behind the outstanding pitching of Ivy Pitcher of the Week Jon Steitz. Steitz tossed a complete game with 14 strikeouts permitting just seven hits and two runs.

R.D. DeSantis collected three hits to extend his hit streak to seven games.

In the second game against Cornell, junior starter Craig Breslow kept par with Yale's golden pitching by striking out 16 batters though the Bulldogs needed 10 innings and a two-run dinger from Dave Fortengaugh to lock up the victory.
