Winter Carnival Issue

In light of the recent tragedy of the deaths of Susanne and Half Zantop, this weekend may not seem the appropriate time to celebrate. Yet now is a time, more so than ever, when we must remember and reinforce the ties that unite the Darmouth community. Ours is a campus where most faces are familiar, and all are friendly. Ours is a campus where doors are left unlocked, and one feels safe walking alone at night. Let us not forget this.

More than a keg jump, more than a towering ice sculpture, more than a packed dance floor, Winter Carnival celebrates the unique character and community of Dartmouth. It's been said that today's carnival pales in comparison to the elaborate snow sculptures and Snow Queen competitions of the past. Yet although the traditions may have changed, so has Dartmouth, and so have we, and the new traditions of today reflect that reality.

So this Carnival, whether you are headed down frat row or up the ski lift, remember the true spirit of the weekend that has remained unchanged for 91 years.
