Skiers pick up 2nd win at Colby

The Dartmouth Ski Team continued its domination of the carnival circuit this weekend. After handily beating the University of Vermont and the rest of the field last week by 30 points, Dartmouth won by nearly 80 points this weekend at the Colby College Carnival in Sugarloaf, Maine.

Dartmouth led the way with 613.0 points, while UVM trailed with 535. UNH tallied 474.0, while Middlebury and Williams rounded out the top five with 463 and 434 respectively.

The men's and women's cross country teams competed in the 20K and 15K Classic races respectively on Friday. The women's cross country team placed four skiers in the top ten in the 15K race.

Co-captains Kate Pearson '02 and Erin Quinn-Hurst '02 finished second and sixth respectively to lead the team to victory. UVM powerhouse Ekaterina Ivanova won the event, but Dartmouth filled many of the top spots.

The men's cross country team took advantage of the return of senior captain Scott McArt from his World Cup races the previous week, by placing three skiers in the top 10, including McArt's fourth place finish.

Saturday's cross country competition was a mixed relay for which two teams of four from each school competed. Dartmouth solidly won the event, placing their teams in second and seventh.

The alpine teams had an incredibly strong performance at Sugarloaf, winning three out of four of their events. Captain Gusty Swift '01 returned to the podium, winning the Slalom race Saturday.

Kristin Luckenbill '02, assisting at the event, said, "There was some added pressure to do well after last week's win, but it did not phase anyone. We kept up the pace in every event and scored our second victory."

Bradley Wall '02 continued his strong skiing performances finishing second in the Giant Slalom and third in the Slalom for the Big Green. Matt Hoisington '04 and Roger Brown '04 continue to impress the field of competitors, as they both had very strong finishes all weekend.

As Dartmouth dedicated the new McClane lodge at the Skiway on Saturday ushering in a new era of Dartmouth Skiing, the Dartmouth Ski Team was making history in Maine as they won race after race, and expanded their margin of victory.

The team has next weekend off from the carnival circuit, before they head to the University of Vermont carnival on Feb. 2 and 3.
