Cornell, Penn take early Ivy lead

Four Ivy field hockey teams squared off against each other this weekend, with Cornell and Penn taking the early League lead. Several other schools took on non-Ivy competition.

Cornell 3, Penn 1

The Big Red emerged victorious from its home opener against Penn on Saturday, marking the team's first 2-0 Ivy League start since 1988. Overall, they improved their record to 3-2, while Penn's record dropped to 1-4, 0-2 Ivy.

Cornell took a quick lead at the 10:23 mark on a goal by senior captain Kate McMahon, who was assisted by freshman Karleigh Burns. Junior Ashleigh Snelson tapped in a goal off of her own rebound later in the half, and sophomore Anna Starkey put in the insurance goal soon after.

Quakers junior Maria Karas was able to reduce the deficit to two in the first minutes of the second half, but the score didn't get any closer. Cornell senior goalkeeper Maureen Sullivan posted five saves, while Penn freshman Carrie Wilhelm saved two shots.

Harvard 1, Brown 0

In Providence on Saturday, Harvard sophomore Philomena Gambale knocked in a goal at the 14-minute mark of the first half for the only score in this close Ivy game. The Crimson's record improved to 5-1 overall, 2-0 in the Ivy League, while the Bears' record fell to 3-2 overall, 0-2 in the league.

Play was even on both sides, with Brown making 11 shots on goal and Harvard posting 12. The Crimson's freshman goalie, Katie Zacarian, made eight saves, as did Brown's junior goalkeeper Annie Owen.

Columbia 5, LaSalle 0

Columbia junior Nikki Campbell posted her first collegiate hat trick Saturday in New York to lead the Lions to a 5-0 rout of LaSalle. Columbia's record now stands at 4-2 overall.

Junior Florence Battalina scored the Lions' first goal of the game in the first half, followed by a Campbell tally just minutes later. In the second frame, sophomore Dana Zullo started another Columbia onslaught with a goal four minutes into the half. Campbell finished off her hat trick with two goals in the middle of the half.

Columbia outshot LaSalle 28-6. LaSalle goalie Julie Hope tallied 14 saves, while Columbia's sophomore goalkeeper Molly Starsia Lasagna made three saves.

Boston College 2, Yale 1

Yale traveled to Boston to visit the Eagles on Sunday, but the day did not have a success in store for the Bulldogs. The loss dropped their record fell to 0-6, 0-1 Ivy.

With 24 minutes remaining in the first half, BC junior Amelie Wulff drove a shot past Bulldog freshman goalkeeper Krissy Nessburg on a penalty corner to start the scoring. Yale answered back with a goal by senior Liz Gardner off another penalty corner to tie up the score. However, the Eagles took control in the second half, outshooting Yale 14-3 and netting a goal by sophomore Liz Flood to carry away the win.

Nessburg tallied 10 saves, while BC goalie Jill Dedman stopped five.
