700 seniors begin recruiting process

Recruiting for seniors begins in earnest today with the first career fair held by Career Services.

Over 100 companies will be at the fair, which is open to all students, and featuring such groups as Time Inc., Ford Motor Co, and the NBA. The fair will run today and tomorrow, with a different 50 companies each day.

The fair is the beginning of the recruiting process in which over 700 seniors are registered to participate. In addition over 30 graduate students are registered as well. Around 200 employers are expected to participate as well, with about half being from the consulting or financial institutions. The number grows every year said Monica Wilson, assistant director of career services.

Seniors may register for recruiting at any time although they may be cut if they miss interviews, which are set up through the office. Students then self-select companies to apply to.

"Students shouldn't panic if they're not participating this fall. There are plenty of opportunities in the winter and spring," said Wilson.

For those not doing recruiting, other options exist. Career Services claims that they can help all students search for jobs anywhere in the world as well as make contacts with people in the field and Dartmouth alumni through the use of several computer programs.

There is also a separate recruiting service offered by the Thayer School of Engineering that caters specifically to science and computer science majors, as well as engineers.

Although students may make the process as intense as they want, David Marmaros '01 said that it takes about as much time as another class if done thoroughly.

Another career fair will be held on Oct. 14, which is designed for Not-For-Profit organizations. A definite count is unknown, Wilson said, as companies are still signing up.
