SA selects Lederer as summer president

The Student Assembly confirmed a number of appointments made by president-elect Jorge Miranda '01 last night, including J.R. Lederer '02 and Sabeen Hassanali '02 as the Assembly president and vice president for the Summer term.

The Assembly also voted to confirm Miranda's nominations for committee chairs. These included Mike Perry '03 in Academic Affairs, Melissa Oliver '01 in Administration and Faculty Relations, Rebecca Davis '03 in Communications, Megan Hitchner '01 in Student Organizations and Jared Thorne '03 in Student Services.

Miranda announced that he had chosen Meg Smoot '01 as the summer presidential assistant, a position that is not voted on by the Assembly.

Miranda said that although it was a difficult decision, he nominated Lederer for president because he was "the most excited about working on many of the summer projects," including student services, programming and MoreCORPS, a community service program that started last summer.

"The summer is really what you make of it and I think his enthusiasm and plans will shape the summer into a productive and exciting time," Miranda said.

Lederer said he is ready to continue things such as community service projects, but also wants to "get the Assembly poised for a great year next year."

One project that the Assembly will begin during the Summer term is a report called "The State of Student Involvement at Dartmouth." According to Miranda, the report "will begin a dialog between students and the College about the role students should play in the decision-making process at Dartmouth."

Miranda told The Dartmouth that this project is just beginning, although administrators are expecting it. The report's ultimate goal will be to suggest ways in which student involvement at Dartmouth can be improved for next year.

Also during the meeting, the Assembly elected Emmett Hogan '01 as next year's secretary and reelected Alex Wilson '01 as treasurer, a position he has served in for the past three terms.

During discussion over Wilson's election, several members expressed concern that he would be the fourth '01 male on the Assembly's executive board.

Wilson's experience prevailed in the end, however, as it was mentioned in discussion that he left the Assembly with surplus funds this year, the first such occurrence in four years.

Miranda said that Molly Stuzman '02, who ran for the vice presidential position in the regular elections, was not interested in the summer presidential role.

Miranda plans to be in Hanover this summer, working on the Assembly in the evenings and acting as a senior interviewer for the Admissions Office during the day.
