Radical women on campus

To the Editor:

I am writing to applaud the efforts of students, and the support of college offices (especially Bigger, Better, Later), for making last night's visit by Sister Spit possible. Hillary Miller spearheaded this effort, and I thank her. Hillary opened the program by saying that while in D.C. last week she felt she was breathing new air and that she hoped Sister Spit would give the audience that same energizing and sustaining feeling. Although I have to admit that as a professional and a mom I squirmed at the elements of drug-culture glorification, the overall event amazed me. The women were brilliant, they refused to compromise, they wove raw rave with compassion and a demand for social justice, and they were too funny. I think there is room on this campus for so many forms of expression, and that we are rich in many of them. This spoken-word-performance-theatre-poetry-reading-rant-session reminds us that edge and challenge can take us "inside the kitchen door to your heart," as one performer put it, where boundaries explode.
