Connell, Horn & Mwaka: Statement from the Executive Board of the Greek Leadership Council Regarding the Installation of Security Cameras in and Around Greek Spaces

The executive board of the Greek Leadership Council condemns the College’s installation of cameras in and around Greek organizations and undergraduate student societies.

The executive board of the Greek Leadership Council condemns the College’s installation of cameras in and around Greek organizations and undergraduate student societies.

Toward the end of this summer, Dartmouth began installing cameras inside several Greek houses without notice. Installation is complete in several houses, with live cameras now operating in Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Xi Delta and 2 North Park — formerly the physical plant for Alpha Phi sorority. Additional projects are partially complete in Chi Delta sorority and Epsilon Kappa Theta, a gender-inclusive house. The College plans to extend these installations to many additional houses across Greek life.

Dartmouth continues to claim that these cameras will be “appropriately placed” at entrances and exits of houses, but installations thus far have shown this statement to be untrue. Although some cameras and mounts are positioned to observe entrances and exits, many others overlook living rooms, communal basements and interior spaces adjacent to bathrooms. These placements conflict with the project’s stated goal of enhancing “the security of areas where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy,” and violate Dartmouth’s privacy policy.

Neither the GLC nor the Intersorority Council, Gender-Inclusive Council, Interfraternity Council or National Pan-Hellenic Council were consulted or notified before installation began. Department of Safety and Security director Keiselim Montás wrote in an email to campus that the installations are the next phase of the College’s Connected and Secure Campus project. Given the abrupt and intrusive nature of these installations, this lack of consultation is unacceptable.

The executive board of the Greek Leadership Council urges the College to abandon the project, cease installation and remove any existing cameras.
