Men's golf to tee-off at NCAA regionals

The Dartmouth men's golf team will compete in the NCAA East Regional Championship on May 18-20.

The Big Green are one of three Division 1 teams to earn a spot in the competition.

Yale and Rhode Island will also play in the regionals, hosted by Temple University at the Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic, Pa.

In addition to the East regional, the NCAA conducts two other tournaments in the Central and West regions. 421 golfers have been chosen for the three competitions.

23 teams from Districts 1-2-3 will be competing at the East regional.

After the regional tournament 156 participants will take part in the NCAA Championship at Grand National Golf Complex in Opelika, Ala., May 31-June 3.

The last time the Big Green last qualified as a team was in 1981 when the championship was played at Stanford. Dartmouth also competed at the NCAA's in 1940, 1941, 1946, 1958, 1970 and 1974. The NCAA began using regional tournaments in 1986.

Five golfers will compete at Glenmaura, including Chris Welty '00, an academic All-Ivy golfer for the past two years. Welty has won a pair tournaments this season, while averaging 75.8 in 17 rounds.

Lee Birchall '02 is second behind Welty with a 76.3 strokes per round average. Birchall has won first team All-Ivy honors in the 1999 and 2000 Ivy League championships.

Jeronimo Esteve '03, an All-New England selection, Kyle Song '01 and sophomore Andrew Pisacano will also be on the Big Green squad.
