While most Dartmouth students were enjoying the spring weather of this weekend by lying on the green, the women's sailing team was busy winning the 10th annual Dellenbaugh Trophy at Brown University.
The Big Green showed their nautical prowess by compiling 81 points over 10 races in the A and B divisions. The squad finished 16 points ahead of Hobart/ William Smith.
The field featured 15 teams, including St. Mary's, which is ranked first nationally, but landed sixth this weekend.
Two-time All-American Erin Maxwell '01 and newly-elected captain Leslie Sandberg '01 dominated the A division, winning by a whopping 25 points after 10 races.
Thalia Pascalides '03 and Carli Prior '01 placed fifth in the B division.
"It was a perfect weekend to get us psyched up for New England's this coming weekend on the Charles River in Boston," said Sandberg. "The breeze was good, we sailed smart, and we had a blast doing it. It's great when practice finally pays off."
"The regatta this weekend was a great opportunity to size up our competition for next weekend," said Maxwell. "Most of the top schools in the country were there and they all sent their top teams."
"This weekend was an exciting win for us because it really boosted our team's confidence after a slow start to the spring season. I think it means good things for us leading into next weekend and the rest of the season."
Next weekend the women's team hopes to continue their success at the New England Championships, where the top five teams advance to nationals, which will be held at St. Mary's in Maryland in May.
Dartmouth's coed team didn't fare as well as the women this weekend. The squad suffered its worst loss of the year at the Admiral's Cup Regatta held at the Merchant Marine Academy.
The Big Green finished 13th in a 20-team field. St. Mary's won the event by six points over Tufts.
Dan Herlihy '00 and Katie Lyndon '01 sailed first division, newly-elected captain Patrick Hogan '01 and Erin Myers '00 sailed B division, while Marcus Coe '00 sailed in the C division.
The coed team went into the weekend ranked fifth in the nation.
